Hiya,
Thanks for the comments.
Anyone else?? Anything you didn't like? Anything you think I should improve on?

Simon

The first think that popped out was your great hand animation. Subtle and sweet. So many speak of the importance of hand gestures, but too many seem to ignore the hands/fingers.
Great work!
Mind if I ask how much you spent on animating this character?

Thanks, yeah hands are really important (and something I always forget to put the time into!). How long did I spend? Humm.. Well it was done in about 2 weeks doing a few hours each night after work. Some nights I'd get 3-4 hours in, some nights I'd fall asleep after 1 :)
I'd say it's about 20 hours in total. Something like that.

Anyone else out there?
Come on there must be things you don't like about this animation.
:)

Simon.

Hmm... time well spent, I'd say. Too bad that not more have seen your animation.
Lookin forward to seeing more work from you. Hopefully, when this damn character is done, I'll have something to share with you that I KNOW I'll need some help with. ;)

Nice animation
The walk over to the stool is funked though. It feels really stiff to me. Put some flap on the foot and give him a bit more weight in the body.
Just out of curiosity, what software was used.
I like it alot, only wish it was longer. I can understand how you work at night after work though. That's the time I spend on my computer learning 3D. Some nights I'm on fire and get far some nights I spend an hour on the same thing and then go to bed. You got some talent though, keep it up!

Wow thanks so much lildragon :) Never thought I'd see my ugly little dude on the front page! :)
So come on you gals and guys with all cool animation jobs up for grabs, don't be shy. Heh!

Simon, awsome job! Just a couple thoughts...
When he steps forward for "basic freedoms," the drag in the leg just doesn't seem to do it for me. It seems like his foot is nailed down or something. Maybe a little step instead? Second, when he walks back to his stool, his feet seem to pick up pretty far, especially the upward rotation of his feet. Maybe tone that down a bit. Lastly, when he sits down, his left arm slides out and then back in on the table. It would probably just stay in one place.
All in all....TERRIFIC!!!
Can't wait to see more. There's nothing like being out of work to really produce some amazing stuff. :)

since you're screamin for some crits, here ya go ;):
cool stuff. i think the step forward, and then the steps later, going to the stool, need some work. specifically on the step forward, the left leg seems to be a bit too stiff, almost like a really really stiff spring. the belly jiggle is kinda cool. i think that its a bit too much at some places, but thats being really nit picky. i really like the "i'm stayin" animation. that rocks. this is some of the best animation i've seen in this forum for a while. :xtreme:

ok first of all "So come on you gals and guys with all cool animation jobs up for grabs, don't be shy. Heh!" <- i resent that :P
2nd.. nice anim, i heard some of the anims in that class were pretty bad from visen, i saw a few..funny shit with the teddy bear trying to catch an air ball...
if this is cmp anim 1, ..doesnt that mean u got atleast 1 more year in scad? ... u would leave for a job? (course i would.., just wondering about u)

Sorry if I offended you. Just being cheeky, doesn't mean anything.
"if this is cmp anim 1, ..doesnt that mean u got atleast 1 more year in scad? ... u would leave for a job?"
I think you must have me mixed up with someone else. I'm not in school anymore (wish I was sometimes).
All the best,
Simon.
Thanks for all the feedback everyone. Lots of good points in there, especially about the stiff walk. He is looking a bit wooden there isn't he. :)

oowww this is fantastic. I really love the way the character moves and the hand stroking the nose is brilliant. Wish I could do this.

I also have a problem with the left leg, when the body is leaning, that leg should be on tip toe instead of being drag.........but it's jsut me, I don't know, that leg stands out, but overall animation is very good

Hi Simon, first of all congratulations in achieving this level of animation. I looked through all the crits but theres not much in them except for personal preferences and style, I believe you have a talent as good as any Pixar animator.
with a little work ofcourse.
... no doubt you'll be getting overwhelmed with job offers soon!
keep posting dude, if anything comes up I'll let you know.
by the way where are you based??

you should post more if you want a job!
on piece is good, but you might've gotten lucky.
2 or 3 more and you'd be solid.

10 second club eh, love the animation, btw, you beat out a guy I know. He was kind a bitter (he did the one with the rabbit), but your win was well deserved.
Hello there
Like I said to you before, great job, in my opinion this is just as good as the animations you see done by pixar, post a few more flicks and Im sure you'll have that job in no-time :)

Indeed, looks great! I just had a pixar animation workshop
and you tend to see a lot more things in an animation you wouldnt normally after been gone through a week with a pixar guy :) The one thing that i think you could improve on is some weight shifting in the hips while he does his steps.
other than that, good stuff!

Arhh slow down! :) It was 2am when all this kicked off... :)
My site yeah I know.. Need to sort all that out, and FAST! :)
Thing is I've been working really hard on my stuff over the last 3 months and so some of the work on my site I wouldn't wish to really be seen.
I'm on it, should all be fixed by the end of the day...
Sorry, didn't think I'd get all this feedback. Thanks Guys.

Nice work:thumbsup:
There is one thing that bothers me though and that is the second step! It is impossible in real life to lift one foot off the ground without shifting the weight to the other foot.
Gl on your job hunting!!
nice animation simon, your demoreel link was down so cant say much about that.
how long ago did you graduate from teesside btw ?

1. what program did u use, unless someone already asked.
2. how many facial expressions did u make for the character?

Hi guys,
Firstly thanks for all the feedback. It really helps me to see and understand areas I have to work on. After looking at the same clip a 1000 times your mind can play funny tricks on you so it all really helps..
What software did I use? XSI 3.01. :)
In terms of facial expresions.. Well I just do those as I go along. I don't sit there for hours creating 100's of shapes. I think having too many shapes is a bad thing as I always tend to get lost on where I am. I start simple with maybe 3 or 4 shapes and build up as I need them. In the end I think I had about 16 shapes in total.
Regards,
Simon.

wicked anim...
but if you want to make it even better....
I think the feet needs a bit curling around the bar of the stool when he sits down... it's the only thing I can remark....adding the curl would give us more the impression of him really leaning on his feet at that moment...
otherwise very very nice anim!

no denying all the animation is great, the only thing I would look at again is that finger twitch,... nice realistic secondary animation but I think it snaps a little quick there. I would simply smooth the curve.

Great animation ... I loved it...only thing I would add is tip the stool foreward a bit when his hand comes at it . Looks like the hand comes at it with some force but the stool doesnt budge.
Thats it. Once again, great piece .... wish you would get your showreel up and working though...

Sorry about it being messed up. Seems my good old ISP thought it would be nice to delete it for me.
So about the reel.. Well I've been working really hard the last few months trying to push myself and I think I'm getting somewhere, looking back at some of my other work this shows. :)
Anyhow I hope you enjoy it. If anything it'll show how I'm hopefully improving! :)
