Hello, I'm apretty advanced user of Max and now I need to learn Maya for my new job. So playing aorund with it I've already bumped into loads of problems.

First off, in Max there's a quick pull down to change from Local to World co-ordinates. In Maya I seem to be lost, do you have to call up a window everytime you want to change this or is there some short cut key I'm missing?

I'm also finding the f-curves very confusing. In Max you can just start pulling the tangent hadles this way and that to effect the curve shape, but in Maya this doesn't seem to be the case. What is weighting? I'm confused!!

Any answers would be much appreciated.

welcome to Maya!!

if you just double click on the move tool icon, or on the rotate tool icon, a window will pop up that will allow you to change your settings for those tools (local to world etc).

as for the tangent handles on the f-curves, if you pick the keys in the graph editor, then you will see that particular key's tangent handles appear. you can then select either side of the handle and the handle will turn yellow. Then you can move the tangent handle around with your middle mouse button. if you want to break the tangent handle so you have control over only one side, then just click on the icon in the graph editor labelled "break tangents". you can then subsequently click the tool labelled "unify tangents" when you want them unified again.

if you want to actually change the "scaling" so to speak of the tangent handle (or its size or length or whatever), then you have to pick the keys whose tangent handles you want to do this to. then go (in the graph editor) to Curves > Weighted Tangents. you'll see the display of the tangent handles change. now you can click on the icon tool in the graph editor lablelled "Free tangent weight" and you'll be able to pick that tangent handle and move it wherever your heart contents.

I hope this helps. this maya community is very commited to helping out everyone using it, so please feel free to keep the questions coming as they pop up.:)

good luck

is you press W while holding your lmb you get your translate controls, it works for E, R also. you can switch to world and back there

Great, thanks loads!!

It's really hard getting used to using the middle mouse click for thing, coming from Max, but I'm sure I'll get there. I have to say that I'm finding Maya an extremely cool little pakage, Hotbox, wow!!!

Thanks again, expect lots of annoying questions in the future!!;)

well i just wanna select 4 point and then make a poly out of them...this is something routine to me at least in lw when i tweak my mesh

yah, the make hole tool will help you with that, it depends on your model though. there is the append to poly tool that can help you as well. i would just read up on the tools any questions on em post heya. cya

well none of them will work for me it seems.... i just posted a screencap of my prob....at least in lw there was the option to make a polygon out of your selected points...so i think there'll be one in maya too or does anyone know a melscript for this one?

good lord!...

do this in all that empty space, select all the verts on the edges, and then fill hole. that will add a polygon inthat space, then just use the split tool later to add edges if you want. what i normally do though is this

i get my create polygon tool and snap to the verticies, to fil my holes, then i just combine the 2 polygons.

thx Levitateme  ....well looks like i have to do it this way...though it's imho a freaking long way to do such a simple task...anyway i'll give it a shot
