View Full Version : paint effects looking weird in mental ray
marcel1980 10-18-2008, 09:07 AM Hi all,
i didn't noticed it before but when i convert paint effects to meshes for mental ray to render, they do look a bit odd very unnatural. Has anyone else noticed this ? Do you guys use some special methods for tweaking? Im using the gamma correct node on the color input of the texture, but this helps only a bit.

The default material for paintfx shaders once turned to polys usually have a reflection on .5, try turning that off.

what exactly isn't looking right? the geometry or the shader?

The shader i guess - its looking too shiny somewhat unnatural. The texture isnt very visible either. I guess that it might be what HamburgeTtrain suggested - turning down the reflectivity. Or is it also something else im missing? I have attached an example what i get when i turn the paint effects to polys {to render in mental ray}

your image is very tiny, but it looks like that is your major issue. It looks like you might be using an IBL, which if the reflectivity is on, you are getting that entire reflection from all angles which washes out the texture. I would try setting reflectivty to 0 first and see if that is your problem. If you want reflections on the surface, but not reflect the full environment, try going to the render stats section of the IBL and turn off visible in reflections if you don't need them for anything else in the scene.
also, check the transluscency of the shader. It may be washing out due to the abundance of light in the scene.

I think your problem is gamma. You have to de-gamma the textures that are created from the paint effects if you for example have one of the "exposure" lens shaders going.
