View Full Version : Blender Questions

1. Is it possible to load or create new icon button styles or new buttons into Blender so that Blender's buttons can have larger icon style buttons with clearer text. I'm thinking something like Modo or Cinema 4D or do I need a programmer to do this? Just a thought!
Blender Menu Font
2. Is there a way to change the font in Blender so it's easier to read?
Pan, Zoom, Scroll Keys
3. Can I set up my pan, scroll, zoom to use any keys or mouse buttons I want. I am familiar with the way a certain 3D app. and I was hoping to use the same keys.
Can I Set up my UI Differently
4. Finally, Are there Blender users out there who have set up there Blender UI to be similar to other 3D applications like Modo, Maya, Max Cinema 4D for e.g. with menus and materials etc. on the left or right. I don't mean color wise, but rather the placement of menus, and materials etc. I am finding the UI a little too cluttered and would like a simpler layout if possible. Where do I find these UI layouts and information on how to do this?
Thanks :)

hi!
first of all: what you need to do is have a look into the user preferences. -->
http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Manual/User_Preferences
that should give you everything you need to tweak blender the way you want it.
1.
icons can be changed, but not in their size. you have to exchange the iconfile. you can find different ones here: http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=84971
have a look, i think there should be explained somewhere how to to that.
2.
-->user preferences --> language&font
3.
--> user preferences --> view&controls
you can change how the viewport-navigation behaves, but you can't assign keys.
4.
right click on window-borders. you can split or join them.

www.pepeland.com (http://www.pepeland.com)
this guy made a blender-max-theme.
or have a look here: http://www.graphicall.org/themes/
and don't forget to save your settings with ctrl+u!
have fun!

Thanks Sebastian, That's too bad you can't assign keys. Will this be changed in 2.50?
Daniel Say's "Just unzip this archive (right click, save as) into you blender folder and open the program"
Sebastian, thanks for the Max-Maya link, I downloaded and installed but I must be doing something wrong because I am not getting the Blender UI to look like his max-maya UI. Could someone please tell me what I may be doing wrong?
I am on a mac. The folder from Daniel (Pepeland) has 0 items in it when I open it. Strange! I don't know if this UI can work on Blender mac so if someone using Blender on Mac could try it I would appreciate it.
If anyone else has another Max/Maya/ Modo Cinema 4D type of setup or can tell me how to set something like this up I would really appreciate it.
Thanks :)

The idea of the event system rewrite for Blender 2.5 is to make such things possible. I'm not sure yet to what extent we are going to have this in the first release of the event system rewrite, but you can be certain that we will have tools that allow to customize hotkeys deeply, as well as stuff like proper macros and such.

It's a standard zip file. It has a icon template in it and a .B.blend file. Set up blender to use the png file as the icon template, and set up the .B.blend file as the default file for blender to open with.
on a mac the user data/settings are stored in a different place,
but I'm afraid, I don't know more than that. :(
what I do know, is that on a mac, just like other unix like os's .something.blend
(or other filetype) files are hidden witch is why the archive looks empty. ;)
hmm.. this post at blenderartists.org may be of help!:

Thanks, Felix you're right on a mac it isn't visible. I will look at creating my own layout then.
Can you tell em how to get a menu to line up vertically on the left. I select the line between the menus and select "Split" but I can't get the menu's to go to the left of the scene windows. I hope this makes some sense. :(
