View Full Version : Is the Unreal Shader broken in 7.5c OS X?

hello,
Can someone confirm with me that if they use the Unreal cel shader (1.00c) in Lightwave 7.5c on OS X(2.6) that Lightwave crashes once it gets to rendering the toontracer?

does anyone know if an older version exists that works, or is this a 7.5c problem?

thanks for your help,

mm

ok, this disappeared off the front pretty quickly. Any OS X users out there?

thanks,

I get the same exact problem. I've posted this problem a bunch of times in a lot of different forums, but no one really seems to know why, or have any solution.

I find myself having to boot up my mac using the OS9, and then rendering it that way. The problem though is that I can't get screamernet to work for OS9, only OSX. So, I can't network/batch render any Unreal/toontracer files.

bums me out.

Oh, and it's not 7.5c, I've tried it with 7.5, 7.5b, and 7.5c - all the same problem.

ohh that's upsetting! I just can't do 9.
I can't find anything in Lightwave that does the outlines like the toontracer in Unreal.

thanks for letting me know,

hey - thought of a little work around for OSX. Turn off toon tracer, go to the object properties for all your objects, click on the edges tab, and click all the edges on except for other. you can adjust the width of the line, the color, and even shrink with distance if you want.

this option may work out even better, as it has better antialiasing than toon tracer. even if you do use toon tracer (assuming it would work in OSX) it's a good idea to click on silouette edges to give it a smoother outline.

I attached some comparisions. Edges is the image using the setup described above, and toon_tracer is using only toontracer (rendered from OS9)

Hope this helps.

What about download a new Unreal Shader?

Search it from flay.com

hey guys,
thanks for your help. I also tried that solution, but I really don't like Lightwaves native toon edges, as they get clumpy. I'm really looking to simply outline the shapes in silhouette, and Lightwave seems to always bring Z depth into the factor. It's something that could be done in a composting app, if i were to render out every single separate element of a character, which really isn't an option for me.

I have the only version of Unreal available on source site, so Flay isn't of use.

I'm still running 10.2.4....I was on 10.2.6 for a while, but Modeler was crashing like there was no tomorrow. Turns out it was some sort of conflict between the vid card, OS version, and Modeler...which to the best of my knowledge, none of the companies involved has even acknowledged yet (despite the fact that the Newtek board was filled with many a Mac user having the exact same problems as myself...)

Anyway, I downgraded back to 10.2.4 and things are working great with all aspects of 7.5c now. I haven't checked the Unreal shader, but I will after I go grab a bite to eat. I'll let ya know in a little bit. :wavey:

hmmm
well, downgrading my system is not an option either, as After Effects is much more stable for me in 10.2.6 and that's my bread and butter.

I too suffer from the ATI modeler crash. I'm on a 15 inch powerbook.

thanks,

While this is an old thread, I thought I'd add the fact that using 10.2.6, toontracer works fine as long as you stick with a square brush. If you try to use the round one... it's crash city.
