Lets just say that it is so hard I don't think we will be getting a lot of entries...
And BTW we have never done anything like this before.

is that the best way to run a competition ?? ;)

I've never really thought of this as a competition, more an exercise to help the members improve by either taking part or in following the threads of those participating. Besides, how much can you really improve by taking on only those projects that you know you can do well? Why not push yourself with something that might at first glance be too tough?

Besides, it isn't the Hardcore Modeling Competition, but the Hardcore Modeling Challenge... ;)

robo3687

i like a challenge.....30 models in 30 days was a challenge.....this sounds much worse....which is excellent...

simjoy

Besides, it isn't the Hardcore Modeling Competition, but the Hardcore Modeling Challenge... ;)fair point, but technically if you run an event in which the result is decided by a public vote, and a winner is declared, then surely its a competition ...

anyway, hard is fine by me as long as there are equal opportunities for hard and soft surface modellers ..

Plus totally useless for most portfolios :\

But I would suggest to subscribe to this thread...
On November 1st I will post the topic.
that way people can start looking for reference...And trsut me, that part will be QUITE HARD.

Wow such a tease... lol and to think November is the first HMC I have time to participate in... Sounds like either it'll push my modeling skills to great heights or kill my soul and make me fail my final exams :(

Anyway, I'm thinking the theme is something totally messed up like model an aether monster, or a five dimensional person, or something that's so hard to conceptualise that visualising it in 3D will make us go loony. Sounds fun!

More realistically though, probably something abstract, or architectural, or abstract architecture, or some weird alien environment and non-character related lol based on this:
I want this time to do a challenge for a group of modelers we have neglected here for a while..

DDS
10-24-2008, 10:53 PM
uhm...? I can't think of any type of modeler having been neglected here, apart from environment related, vehicles, etc.

WyattHarris

Well its not those that push for more classical stuff as we did the Louve challenge, hmm.

RageOfAges
10-25-2008, 02:26 PM
I'm guessing we will have to model the scientologist god ( forget his name ). It must be the scientologists we've been ignoring...

RobertoOrtiz
10-25-2008, 04:32 PM
We will revisit classical stuff soon

For future challenfe I was thinking of things like

Trasures of Acient Greece (http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images;_ylt=A0geu5A4SQNJ1SkAAPNXNyoA?ei=UTF-8&p=ancient%20greek%20%20sculpture&y=Search&fr2=tab-web&fr=yfp-t-109)
Treasures of the Met (http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images;_ylt=A0geu6GBSQNJcCkAR3dXNyoA?ei=UTF-8&p=Met%20sculpture&y=Search&fr2=tab-web&fr=yfp-t-109)...
Master sculptor Michelangelo Tribute (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michelangelo).
But that is in the future...
For now we will do a more technical challenge.

robo3687

RobertoOrtiz

This is a very cool challange, but does this mean it has to something real life? You can't do something like a futuristic vehicle, or a mech, or anything sci-fi.

I would prefer real life...but if there is enough interest for fantasy I will allow it...BUT
it would have to be based on established scifi franchises (Aliens, Trek, Star Wars) and it has to based on blueperints and other sort of research material.

You build it, you provide the research. No shortcuts

count me in :)

Yes, you can use any method you want.

And BTW to all DONT JUMP THE GUN YET.

Do research and gather reference material for your model in the next twp weeks.
You will need to provide it with your entry.

My favourite choice at the moment (May Change) is the HMS Victory and the main reference will be from a book 'The 100-Gun Ship Victory (Anatomy of the Ship Series) by John McKay'
Search on Amazon.com and you can do a look inside.

The Question is: this book has copyright issues so it would be dodgy to just scan some of it and post it here so how do we get around the 'you provide the research'? Is, that's the book I'm using statement enough?

Provide a link to the amazong listing of the book.
And if the book is out of print, at least describe your research process.

So, how's everyone getting on? I'm all set for my HMS Victory attempt. Anyone having trouble founding what they need? Maybe someone else can help. I know how difficult it can be getting enough info on what things look like on the inside, a few photo's rarely do it.

Yeah I am looking forward to this challenge, I hope to make a portfolio piece out of it. Anyway I'm having a crack at the old Sikorsky S-16 and I found a great website full of photos of the thing from nearly every useful possible angle. Also training/working in the aviation industry does help with the understanding of how components are fitted and what they look like so I am pretty much all set to go!

Clanger: Wow, nice portfolio mate! It seems that these cutaway projects aren't new to you but still the HMS Victory will be a quite a challenge so good luck with it!

I came close to going for the 'Sikorsky HH-53C Super Jolly' but I knew I'd struggle for internal reference and with the short time these challenges get it would have probably de-railed the project.
Plus something I've wanted to do for as long as I can remember and I'm talking pre-computer here, I used to do these things with pencil and ink, is a Gas Turbine engine but where would you get the plans to build one, especially the sort of thing you'd find inside an airliner.

ZaneV
11-21-2008, 02:22 AM
Clanger: That is such as coincidence as I was going to do that very same aircraft, I even bought a old aircraft book with a cutaway of the Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallion and top, side and front schematics of the HH-53C Super Jolly.

Let me know if you are still interested and I can upload them for you

moonangel
11-21-2008, 09:06 AM
Currently trying to find References for the "Vulture" Battlemech, ok its not a "real" Object, but original Blueprints from FASA exist, its only hard to get onto them for FASA doesn't exist anymore, and even though it's not real, it's the only thing i could motivate myself to do, if i participate in the next challenge. (I don't want to model Cars or Airplanes or that stuff.)

We will see, how many, how detailed reference i can get on to, and then, if it is enough to make a model of it

I'm struggling to find something to do. I was going to make this a portfolio peice. I was thinking of doing an American Civil War Ironclad, as that is sort of what I used to be into. But I wanted to be able to show that I can make something (relatively) modern.

So I was thinking of Submarines and Spacecraft (the Lunar Module was one). But that is going to take forever to get right. I don't want to do a cutaway that is basically the shape filled with lots of colored boxes. But if I do a proper job, Its going to take me WAYYYYY more than one month to pull off at the amount of time I have to do this. basically I've got about 12 hours a week to work on the project.

The other option I had was an MP3 player. But thats going to be really simple. Probably too simple. I do have the option of having worked for SanDisk so I have lots of examples I can take apart to get the details right! :D

This challenge looks awesome, I have been looking for some reference, but I only get some bad images or really small blueprints. If anyone knows were I can get some good blueprints or images I can use, that will be awesome.

I don't know what I will work on yet, so any reference is good, but I was thinking on an armored vehicle or ship, maybe.

I've found books to be better than the internet at this sort of ref as usually the pictures you find are far too low res.
As to blue prints, model engineering companies sell them for all sorts of things but at a price.
You may have some luck at a museum they often have an archive that can be searched and copies made.

Plastic kits can also be useful, some of them have quite detailed interiors plus a bit of internet research to fill in the gaps.
