randyrives 06-10-2003, 02:47 AM Just a simple model that I did tonight. Trying to hone my modeling skills by doing a simple model each night.

cool idea randy, also keeps those creative juices flowin, kinda coincides with that recent discussion on lack of inspiration.
But if you enjoy doing these you should consider joining cgtalks cgfightclub. We do tonnes of models or digital sketches in about fifteen minutes, then upload them and vote. Lots of fun and talent and you sure become really versatile with your tools.
to join simply use any IRC application, log onto irc.freenode.net and then channel #cgfightclub
Its a lot of fun, familar faces like mdme sadie (though he hasn't been there in a while, pretty busy and all)
heres some of mine form the last session

this was all done in about an hour and a half. not the greatest models, but seriously, for fifteen minutes, they are all good starts.

Sounds like fun. I will check it out. I don't have any IRC apps installed, so I will have to do that first.

Oh, on a second look, I"ve noticed your shadow on the ground is odd, it makes the great bench look like its floating. Very nice render though.

Can you point out where it looks like it is floating. I just don't see it. I am not doubting you, just need these untrained eyes to be guided.
Thanks!

the front legs, especially the one close to the camera, its jus tthta the shadows is so soft there, an area shadow could solve that, or simply a higherres soft shadow map.
yeah just up your shadow map, area shadows take mucho ammounts of time.

It's a cool bench. I realize it was just an exercise, but the lighting looks a little off to me. It appears to be a cloudy/hazy morning with no direct sun, so there should be a sort of non-directional diffuse light instead of the fairly strong overhead lighting. Or maybe it's sunny and the fog's just burning off?
maybe its a prop in a play and there is a spot light and stage fog.
its always a possiblity.

Maybe I did this for an Alien world where the Fog never burns and the sun shines bright :p
Yeah this was just an excerise, I actually did the lighting for just the bench, no Fog, no Trees etc....
Then I thought I would add some trees, sky, then I saw I need something to break up the horizon's hard edge, so I add fog.
Never really considered the lighting again. Thanks for pointing this out, as it will help me to think of these things when I do real work.
yay fight club plugs :D
