if hideaki anno directs it and they don't make it just about big robots is going to be cool (eva is not about mechas :shame:, is about characters)

I love Eva and WETA! :applause: :applause:
About the original Eva....
Remember that it wasn't just Gainax, it was Gainax + Production IG who worked on it too! :D
Production IG has worked heaps of stuff, and they're mostly famous for Ghost in the Shell, but they also did Blood, Jin-Roh, FLCL and worked on Evangelion.... In fact, didn't they do all the new animation for Evangelion movies? Anyone know for certain?
The chief director of "EVANGELION DEATH AND REBIRTH" is Hideaki Anno, with Masayuki and Kazuya Tsurumaki acting as directors. The movie was produced by GAINAX and the group of tight-knit staff that supported the TV series. The animation production was handled by PRODUCTION I.G.

On the other hand, the film's presentation is simply striking, especially when compared to the "Perfect Collection". Presented in letterbox format, the movie finally achieves the cinematic look that the series always hinted at. The animation, courtesy of Production I.G. ("Ghost In The Shell", "Patlabor 2") is topnotch, and I don't think I'll ever get tired of watching some scenes (like Asuka's last stand). The film's story is incredibly ambitious, and the visuals never once falter or disappoint. (http://www.opuszine.com/movie_reviews/review.html?reviewID=170)
It'd be awesome if they got Production IG to input some ideas on the eva live-action as well! /me dreams
i dunno how different they are but the fine print says Weta Workshop not Weta Digital...

Yeah, I am confused about that as well. Weta Digital handled the CGI stuff in LOTR, and Weta Workshop handled the creation of costumes, weapons, armor, minitures, sets and all non-digital work. I'm assuming that WW will not be working on the CGI work in Eva, but some other company like Production IG which has a strong CGI pipeline might do the digital stuff.
hmm considering the huge amount of CG a live-action evangelion movie would require, and all the hype surrounding Weta's involvement with the project (ADV emphasizing "Weta's industry-leading skill in the creation of special visual effects...") , It's probably a safe bet that Weta Digital will work on the cg :D
Weta Workshop, which is essentially Weta's traditional art department, would produce the bulk of the concept art anywayz ;)
btw, Production IG does 2D animation, not so much cg :p

Actually, Production IG does a good amount of CG, more than any of the other Anime Studios. They incorporate alot of CGI stuff into their animation, like Blood, Jin-Roh, Ghost in the Shell and so on. I remember the director of Blood came to Big Apple Anime Fest 2 years ago before Blood was released and showed behind the scenes work on Blood and stated that Blood was mostly all CG.
I wouldn't assume that digital is coming along with workshop, they still have to finish Return of the King and then start working on King Kong. I don't see how Eva will be crammed in.
True, the cg in blood was pretty awesome... opps, ignore what I said, sorry! poor wording on my part  what I meant to say, is that I don't think their cg resources are quite up on par with say the near photoreal work done by weta digital/ ILM/ other dedicated vfx studio tho, and that their forte was working within the realm of 2d animated features. ;)

Well that goes without saying, not alot of studios have the resources or talent like Weta/ILM and so on, but that can also be said about Production IG. It is one of THE best animation studio in the world, and I would bet that they can produce quality CG work if they were contracted to. It wouldn't be a lack of resource or talent, it is a matter of interest in the Japanese market for CG.
Also, Production IG has already done several live-action CG shots as will be seen in Tarantino's Kill Bill.
Gainax and Production IG has such a tight relationship, I would be surprised if that doesn't continue with the live-action.

ahh, awesome! that's interesting to know! :applause: The last thing I heard about them was that they were working on was the new GITS animated series, but had no idea that they were expanding into vfx too :D
