hi, this is my last picture. it was once again an exercice for me to learn UV mapping, character stylisation, non organic stuff texturing, rigging... i also wanted to avoid the CG look of the picture, so i tweaked it in photoshop, adding textures, noise... there is no radiosity but many spot lights. The render time for the picture is about 5 minutes. i try to find myself a "style" in 3d... i don't know where to go between stylisation and realism, i try to master both and this picture is the result of this mix: semi-realistic architecture and textures and cartoony characters. it may look strange to pepole, i don't know, so i hope you will like my picture.

see you !:wavey:

one last technical thing : i use lightwave and this software is a headache for me when it's about rigging characters. Orhopedics Pack 1 from Irrational Number is a great tool to avoid many problems due to lightwave bones system. take a look at there page : http://www.irrationalnumber.com/html/Irr_home.htm

thanks BnE :) PoP was a comic project that I was starting up, but have redirected my efforts towards animation and CGI projects, which will be at that site as they get started.

Oh, and thanks for the new desktop picture, with some cropping it looks great :buttrock:

Goatfuzz : thanks, i'll try to...

ddv : thanks, ddv, you know i don't speak chinese, so i just a searched chinese words in google and what i found was a kind of chinese "alphabet". there was no traduction... since i'm a lazy guy, i just copied this word without even knowing it's meaning... so please excuse my very low knowledge of chinese. ;) and i thank you for your proposition about sending me chinese words, but i think i'm finished with this picture, i just compressed the sources and now i want to do something different... you see i told you i was a lazy guy! :D

-R.Quinn : thanx, i had many problems with tweaking the dof... i'm glad you like it! i tried to work on composition and dof was a big deal !

javascream : it's a great honor to know my picture on your desktop ! i wish you the best for your future projects! :wavey:

thank you everybody for your replies it makes me really happy and forces me to do my best!

thanks, i'd like to make a little movie, but my animation skills are very low, i have lot of problems with setting up correct IK and deformations... but i'm learning and when i will be ready i think i'll try to make one... :)
and year, by the way it's because i'd like to animate the things i do that i try to keep very low render times... i believe that 5 minutes per frame(it's the render time for this picture at this resolution) is really correct if i want to make an animation... :D i hope i will be able to do it one day!

Great, let us know when you are there with your animation :)

The lighting in your image is great. I get the feeling there is a storm coming and those are the last rays of light we'll see for awhile.

I dunno, but the mood is perfect :)

hehe, i'm glad my picture makes you feel something! i think i will start the animation in a few weeks because my computer goes crazy, so i'm gonna buy a new one. Then i'll try to animate it. thanx again for you replies!

Should be very interesting animated. And you used Ortho!
Glad you find it useful.

thanx voxel! about animating, i'm learning for the moment. my first animation will be a lowpoly character walk cycle. i'm working on it at the moment. and year by the way, i'm also exploring Ortho possibilities and it's for me the ultimate bone tool! i still hate rigging and skinning but with ortho, it's really easier! when i will feel myself ready, i'll try to animate my little buddhist temple. ;)

I animate : thanx, hehe, i also hope i will be able to show more of my work with a better quality!

Argon18 : hmm... i'm really happy that you like it but i don't undesrtand your critic. i think a part of your message is missing... if i refer to the picture you attached, then it's a problem about the "lanterns"(i don't know how to call that in english...). and you're right it was a big problem for me, i didn't know how to make it translucent like real paper. the lightwave transluency sux and i didn't want to use a plug in for SSS, so year it's not translucent as it should be... i hoped it would not be noticable, but hey almost the whole picture is occupied by lanterns... hehe :D i'll try to find a way to simulate better translucent things in lightwave...

_mistle_ : wow, thanx!

Thank you all cause all these replies make me really happy during the day at work !

Hey BNE! I like your style :) more like this please :D Just one question: that man with glasses looks like he's floating in the air or is he jumping? Other than that, I really like it :applause:

thanx for your comment varzock ! i wanted to make him look like he was attaching the little piece of paper to the lantern but you're right the pose is strange and he's a little "floating". actually he's standing on one feet to get higher, nut it's not easy to understand. hehe thanx again ! :D

i just upgraded the picture because the old book style border it had before "distracted" the viewer as Raul told me. and he's right , now it's much better and much more readable! Thanx Raul fo your crits! :bounce: :bounce:

Hi,
This is a really great image! I really enjoy it :D great work!

I am sorry if it has been said (I dont have a lot of time to read everything for the moment), but there is a little thing that bugs me, It's the shadow that has the same blur from the begining (near the feet) to the end.
I know that you tryed to make it easy to reander that's maybe why ;) .
also 5 min of rendering with the blur and all? woaw that is really fast!

Très joli boulot et bonne continuation.

thanx for the comment ! nope, this hasn't been said, but it's truely true! i used only spotlights and shadow maps so there is no shadow "diffuse attenuation" like with an area light... the renders were too long(well, i mean it went over five minutes) so i choose not to use area lights. for my next picture, i'll try ty find something to fake the area shadow.... merci d'avoir pris le temps de dire un mot sur on image!

Hey man. Im sorry about my previous post. I was having some problems and I thought that I didnt post it. Sorry.

I was going to say:

I think that the characters fit the semi realistic temple. With good style.

Above all what I like more is the textures, they are very good.
Aswell lighting.

But there is a problem in the textures. that you have use same texture projetion (maping) in diferents objets. Like for example all the lamps. They all looks like cloned, with the same texture.
(Hope you undersand what im tring to say) is the image i atached previously.

Again the same problem in the woods at the top of the temple. They are sopouse to be, differents planks (sticks) of wood. Like differents bars that form the wall. But they have the texture seamless. (atached image)

JonC have reason, the shadow of the guy is very blury, while the shadow cast by the SUN have to be sharp. No soft.

I was also going to say to put a in shadow for the frame, but you have remove it. hehehe :)

Well, I said this thing just in case you are going to animate it, you would like to improve it.

Sorry about my english
Very good, i like it a lot. Keep going.

THANX ARGON18 !
this what i call a constructive critic! it's really cool from you to take time to say something! yes i understand everything you said and you were right for everything.
about the textures, i know... since i'm a really lazy guy(and i MEAN it), i just mapped planar on the whole architecture and there are many little problems like the ones you said. i wanted to add blur on the background so i thought people woudn't notice my mapping problems... but i found that blurring the background was not nice. so now everybody can see how lazy i am... even when doing things i love... :D
for the lamps, yes i confess, it's all clones... i just rotated them to make them less similar... and finally, for the shadows i don't know what to say... you're right the shadow should be sharper or it should have an attenuation, like real soft shadows.... i did none of that, my shadows are too soft and they don't have any attenuation...(is attenuation the right word in english?) i'm gonna fix all that when i'll work on the animation... i thank you for everything you pointed out and i assure you that it will help when i'll render the animation ! see ya! :wavey:
