View Full Version : Proton Modeling Tools
proton 06-09-2003, 09:07 PM While I was in Dallas I did some character modeling demos and Kevin MacPhail and I talked about what would speed up my modeling.....here are 3 tools that he created yesterday for me that you might like as much as I do....
PMode- Allows you to toggle between points and Polygons and avoid the volume modes....I hate those modes.
PShift- Allows you to smoothshift polygons without ever leaving your current tool....my personal favorite :)
PMirror- This is hard to explain unless you have seen the way I mirror items....if you have some points that aren't on teh center line it will automatically fix them.....you don't have to select anything...just hit PMirror and it does everything for u :)

Kevin Rocks.....be sure to drop him an email and tell him thanx!

I'm finding a few problems with PMirror.....so if you run into any problems please post them here so I can get him the feedback...Thanx!
Thanks Proton!
Policarpo just pointed me to your "Modeling Steps" entries in Newtek tutorials - so thanks for that too!

Great tools, especially that Pshift and Pmirror, I model the same way! Thanks for sharing!
You know, I have never, ever used the volume tool to select anything. What exactly is it supposed to be useful for?

some people like it....I've never seen anyone use Volume unless they are showing people what it's for :P

Pshift just rocked my world. I use a wacom tablet to model, and sometimes the pen moves a little when I smoothshift, causing it to expand and seperate. Not any more!
Wow, this is just great.

from my pov newtek could remove volume mode ( that would make some space for an edges button  )

I use volume mode (inclusive) to remove one half of heads when modelling. I also use it to align the remaining points from the deletion back to zero, then I mirror the half I want again.
It is fast since once you draw out the volume and go to another mode the volume is still there. Just switch in, delete, set x=0, and go back to poly/points.
It is also very good (exclusive) to select everything outside the volume to remove.
I wish that it had the ability to "fit to" volume. That would make it 10x more useful. Also the ability to change the type of volume (cube, sphere, pyramid, etc...) would also make it more useful.

Pmode works but I'm confuzzled about the hotkey setup.
When I added it to the spacebar it wouldnt drop the tool(rotate, move, etc).
Even the "/" wouldnt drop the tool.
How did everyone set the hotkeys for it?

Pmode doesn't seem to behave like the normal selection tool. It won't make a box for instance. It just shuffles between point and poly, leaving the box tool active, not making the box.

when I mirror I select the half I don't want ....Set Value to Zero......delete that half......then Mirror...it works perfect everytime :)
PMirror is supposed to do that but it seems that there are a few problems with it...give Kevin time and I'm sure he will have it fixed soon!

I don't use Pmode on my space bar....I just set it up on a different key....The space bar is still what I use for dropping tools and stuff

I'll have to play with it. He's quick though, he's already updating the pmirror on his page :)

Oh yeah :bounce:
And I very occasionally use the volume mode to delete on half of an object.

Just me then :); for deleting/mirroring part of a symmetrical head on an asymettrical body, among other things.
'Course, if I knew what I was doing I'd add the asymmetry to the body after finishing the head

I also use the volume mode from time to time. It's the only way to get a precise straigh-line selection which you know for sure will be straight.
terryford: I love that Grand Moff Tarkin(sp?) in your avatar. Looks spot on.:applause:

really will be great lw with edges support.
anyway, pmode is rox!!!
pshift I can't see useful. smoothshift works fine when you do a quickly RMB click (0,0).
Thanks
The thing that seems cool about pshift is you can keep your move tool or whatever tool you use active without having to switch to smooth-shift just to do a right-click.
Anyway, I like it already.

I love that it keeps my current tool as well....and there is no chance of accidentlly clicking twice or loosing my selection.....I'l in love with this tool!

These tools are pretty cool. Pshift rocks.
I use volume but not as much as point/poly selection. I got in the habit of using it before there were selection sets since it remembers the previous volume. I find it quicker than lassoing points/polys in a some cases. Also a lot of people don't seem to realize that you can make lasso volumes too.

These sound like some of the scripts that already exist. Has anyone used all the mirror scripts to let us know what the differences are?
I pshift the same as smooth shift of zero without dropping the current tool?

Hey Proton... not wanting to take your thread too off track here but, I've been wondering... Since you work at Newtek and you are seriously badass at modeling AND animation from what I've seen... have you given any input to Newtek (and have they listened) as far as enhancenments to LW.

I don't have any specific feature requests as I'm still learning. (I do happen to think you are badass). I was just curious though because of stuff like the tools in this thread and you seem to be pretty enthusiastic about alot of products like animanium (sp?). I just kinda thought.... awww nevermind.

don't forget that I'm a LightWave user just like the rest of you guys......I see no shame in getting excited about tools other then LW...Animanium looks cool....these LScripts are cool....and I believe LW8 will be cool....
Proton's a bad ass? :surprised

Bad ass is such a strange compliment, if you really think about it. I mean, you're telling someone that they are an evil donkey, or (even worse), a foul arse. Quite odd :surprised
Proton is my evil, bad ass twin! :applause:

geez...
Sorry my fanboy side was showing. I happen to believe Proton has incredible modelling skills and what I've seen of his animation (not nearly enough) are pretty good too.
I was merely inquiring whether he personally has made any suggestions to Newtek on ways to improve the app. I would think that someone on the inside might have some say. I'm not saying "hey Proton take all of our ideas to the developers" but... since he does work there and obviously has some ideas on how things flow better than what exists now... One just might think that they would want to harness that knowledge.
Scenario:
LW_Developer: Hey William, we are working on that complete rewrite of Lightwave that CIM has been suggesting, and we know you havez some mad phat modelling skillz and your animation skillz are the illest. Aside from that dope GUI that dude on the Newtek forums created, what would you like to see, yo?
W_Proton_V: Ummm... I'm not sure what you just said there young fellow but I think you should look at how apps X, Y and Z have implemented it, take a look at these plugins and take the "Animators Survival Kit" and build an easy to use interface that does all that.
I would be equally impressed with Proton if he wasn't working for Newtek. Sorry for the interruption folks.

I use it also. Funny that so many haven't taken the time to understand how to use it.

Someone asked for how people assign a key for PMode -- I use another plugin, ToggleMode, but it does the same thing. Since toggling Point mode is Ctrl-G by default, and I wanted the toggle mode function to be a fast switch, I rearranged the G keys based on the 'most-often-used, easiest-to-key-in' principle:
* Ctrl-G - Snap Tool (was G)
* G - Center view on mouse pointer (was Snap Tool)
* g - Toggle mode (was Center view on mouse pointer)

Oooh, lifesavers. Cool tool(s). Pressing space between points-polygons-"volume" (who use volume?) was really anoying.
thanx

Thanks Proton ,shall give them a whirl:bounce:
I now use volume a lot (almost indispensible) I didnt for years and then suddenly it seemed to make sense, however it would be nice if you could just toggle between Points and Polys and choose Vol when you wanted:thumbsup:

You can.
1. Alt-F10
2. Look for Bottom Edge and remove the volume button.
3. Save settings.
Then just add the volume button somewhere else. No you can toggle between points and polys. I actually just use the hotkeys everytime though.

Hurray, Massive increase to my workflow. I'd also like to second, or is that 15th/16th, the vote to move the Volume mode to someplace else. But since others use it then heres a suggestion make the mode button modifiable like the menus, tabs, ect..
Thanks for these great scripts.
