well well, what is there to say ;)

mesh quality matches the renders..

personally i think 5 sided polys are okay in flat areas, but that's more of philophical problem ;) (so shut up fist!)

For me five and three sides polys are ok as long as they don't deform and as long as the smooth result looks good. Great mesh dude !

Frikkin awesome work guys. You've certainly cooked up a storm.

I'm must admit, I'm not usually a fan of cutesy game characters, but the diversity of these really are really awesome. They all seem very different, but I could envision them all running around in some deathmatch perversion of mariokart.

It's rare even in well funded AAA games that you get characters as cool as this.

Nice work and I'll be keeping an eye out for them at the finish line.

hi neox i was seing loan face and thinking hat his nose will be more animal as we can see in ria website.

http://www.anibyte.com/facial1.jpg

i think it could be more in the way that anybite do with this face that in a realistic nose.

is more like a stilistic animal nose.

seing torcas made by fellaw you can see that the nose is less realistic and i think that ria nose can be less realistic too.

are you thinking im right?

stenarts
06-23-2003, 05:53 PM
Cool, where do you got this Loan nose from...;)

luigi
06-23-2003, 06:09 PM
this is in the anybite website (http://www.anybite.com)

the have a great style similar to disney character , but i like a lot your concept sten they are impresionant ,and you have your own style.

hopes one day i could work with some nices concepts are yours.

for me to find a great concept is a dificult task.

concept arts thinks that model is dificult and modeller artist think that concept is more dificult.

stenarts says:

ha ha ha, not really....its a long and hard way for the 3d part and my respect is up to them because they make of just a little sketch a cool 3D model...

and i said like someone says

sten is a god

stop that he doesn't like that :D

1. i'm not quite sure what your point with the nose is ;)
i guess if i'm coloring it like in the anibyte picture, it won't look that much dufferent, its just a "fatter" version, loan has a sharp/curved nose not such a "bubble" nose as this guy up there :D
i like that design and its really great, but i guess this won't fit to loan :)

You are a great modeller i only said wha was my interpretation of sten concept.

I can just imagine Sten and the rest running around in their lair madly concepting and modelling :wip: , all the while bumping into each other. Meanwhile beakers full of bubbling liquid explode  and funky 50's mainframe computers spew reems of paper printed with random numbers.

the thumb is too short? its almost to long in my opinion, lets see on human proportions (i know its comic, but ptroportions are not that different ;) )
you can reach the first joint of your Indexfinger (not the knuckle ;) ) with your thumb. with the thumb he has now, he can reach the second yoint and almost the fingertip.... thats way too long in my opinion :D

DimitrisLiatsos
06-24-2003, 11:03 PM
U have to forgive mre ..but i agree with Neox my friend dom ..the thumbs actually are a bit long...it could be a little bit shorter!

hope u guys have read what the mods have posted up regarding giving comments. no fluff. I think its a really good initiative, and let's be frank with each other so that we call all improve. You guys are welcomed to shoot my work anytime. Thats what a crit is for, isnt it?

I'be been doing some rigging lately during work and i know it aint an easy job. kudos to joebount on his good work. Some things i'd like to point out though:

the seam on his shoulder seems to be too weighted to the upper arm. personally feel that it would look better that the sleeves are hanging from the seams,of which would be placed further up, on top of the shoulder.

Thumbs still look long to me. Maybe its just me:p

Legs look really lovely. Full of form. nothing to crit on.

Heels look slightly jutted out. I dunno whether that's in the concept or not, it looks like a hind toe.

Admirable work nonetheless. Definitely worth drooling over.

I venture into deadline fog and when I get back, this!
I hope you guys will continue to make some short of this after creating all these nice creatures. I'd love to animate them.
The chorus is singing something about a to long thumb, and I'll join in. It does look a bit wierd. And as dom said, that heel looks strange. Someone else mentioned the feet beeing to flat, I think it's just the base (the part closest to the leg) that needs a wee bit of raising.
Yes, fellah :) I'm alive (somewhat) again. Didn't knew it could be this hectic in games, I thought post was bad. The job at warthog is nice, I really enjoy animating full-time. (sorry for not getting back sooner, I'll try and improve).

I like the shirt pretty much. Looks pretty Fightclub ;]

But I still don't like the face. He looks like Thundercats and not like Legend of Light. I know that you worked with Stan over the head but it got a total different look then the original drawings.
Try a bit more to keep the original dynamics, expecially at the pants.

Neox
07-01-2003, 01:30 PM
I don't think so, currently it's the facial expressions which differs a lot with all those pictures, the hairs are currently not one with the head, and he will look much different with the real colors (in my opinion).... the pants are a huge problem, if i'm going to model them exactly as in the picture, they'll be a real boring 3d model (to simple) and they look really odd when bending... the only thing would be clothsimulation to keep the form and let it still look good... but i guess thats a overkill for loan, i guess i made the right decision with adding those details to his pants and show his knees a bit, so it won't look that strange when bending... uh my english is bad :/

dobermunk
07-01-2003, 01:46 PM
Methinks the proportions are a bit off. Your model is like a stout martial arts fighter - short but stocky. THe drawing are a bit younger, with a smaller trunk and exagerrated extrimities.

I also would have interpreted tyhe lines around the mouth as indicating color (like those lines on the arms) and not a physical crease - among other reasons to more easily maintain a more cartoony level of detail.

With the pants, I think the challenge is exactly what you've mentioned. To have low level of detail, but to indicate flesh and bone underneath. Perhaps a softbody cloth over squash-and-strretch polygon legs.

Ich druck dir den Daumen!

Carny
07-01-2003, 01:48 PM
I'm nor talking about a 100% adaoption of the pants but so he got pretty different pants with a pretty different style.

I think it aint the facial expression which differ so much from the original. Your face is mouch rounder and the mouth-edge-area is to sharp, teh face looks strangely to flat.
Till know it looks just not right. I just like the original ways more.

Thank´s to you all,

its really a great pleasure for our team to get all that helpful critic because sometimes we cant see the wood for the trees by all our hard work on the models. Yes it´s a cool Loan but as well its right that there are still minor things we should try to modify to get closer to the original design.

I think we should try to analyze the Loan model again because your distance to the model and design possible helps us to push it the final direction.

What i have to say is that this character are really hard work for everyone, for Neox to model and as well for me to draw... :wip:

Thanks everyone for the ideas and critic which we take seriously as a good way to improve our design and models.

the last time i gave my characters or animals to a texture artist for unwrapping them, i got them back with holes, or different proportions... this wioll never happen again, so i have to unwrap all characters and creatures :p

ok a quick one...

holes ?? Different proportions ???
Is it possible that some people take the
expression 'unwrap a mesh' word-for-word ?

wow! really nice it looks so much more like the original concept good job but i think the only thing that throws it and maybe you've figure this out but i think the body looks to muscular and human like that s why it looks a little of it looks like theres a guy with a mask on i think if you tone down the body to more of a cartoon state like the head you will be dead on .

but i really like what you did with the head good job

Neox, JoeBount and fellah, you really did those wonderful concpets justice. 3 fantastic modelers working on beautiful, interesting and fun concepts...what more could one ask for!!! I see a few things i could nit pick about but its too late in the game for that :) Again, wow...I can feel this game and i wanna play it!!!!!!

Hey guys that's really cool. Fun looking crew you got there.
I really wish however that you guys could have given more vivid texture color, more depth, they look real simple, not bad mind you,but not deep enough.I know these are more simple type characters but still more depth would have been nice.Plus a scene with them in action would have been killer.Better poses would have been cool.
Anyways it's one of the best entries for all intents and purposes. My favorite are the vehicle with the wheel and the one eyed guy.But actually they are all well done.Nice job guys.Nice entry.

good suggestions sten, I would have liked it more if they where much more colorful to. (like the oldguy on the bike a few pages back)
maybe some simple frame around the pic to.. and a little turn and tweak on each characters position for better silhuettes. a bright backlight. maybe a square hole in the BG just behind the characters, with a landscape BG shining through..
but neox did a really good job depending on the little time he had yesterday night. and the important thing is not the scene, but all the work that got done for this game in this short amount of time(mostly by you guys, I can't take much credit)

HA HA HA, you guys are really cool !

What decision the jury will do anyway will not have any effect for us we will still continue on the project and future challenges.

I saw so much good work from many sides at the challenges and for me there are more then one 1st, 2nd or 3rd places.

So much creative and interesting results...really cool and great work from all...

Why to wait for the result go ahead with your projects and show us what you really wanted to go for. It would be a pity if you all stop with what you have done for the challenge...

you bet! i'd love to see more from you guys on this too, and i'm sure you'll do it.. just like all the projects on your site this has too much potentional to be cast away just because the deadline is over! that's what i love about these challenges, they are always a great inspiration. i for one have never abandoned the work i did for past challenges after the deadline, and this one will be no exception :)

I still develop more and more creatures for that project, a few new steps here as well for you to look at. Well these are only designs for an incidental Character but i thought it would be nice to show you some more steps on that project.

Really nice work stenarts:)

I like the one on the right more. It's hard to tell what the one on the left looks like and if you don't look closely enough, it looks like a flag pole or something heheh.

You know, it's to bad you aren't doing anything for cgchat while you wait for cgtalk's next contest. I think your style would fit right in for this month's topic of cute duettes. But then, it's a game model competition:p

Take care guys, and keep up the marvoulous work!!
