I've got to enter this challenge!

Here's a general, rough concept of a hoverbike for a racing game. The driver is completely enclosed and rides on his stomach, face first, looking through the front glass to get a full view of what's going on. I haven't totally developed the idea of the game yet but something I thought about was to make the tracks multilevel and not circular...we'll see where that goes...but it WON'T be Minority Reportish, no copycats here. The bikes will not be limited by the tracks.

Stay tuned for the model. Maybe I'll get some comments once I start that up! I know how it goes round here....:)

Don't worry... most times I look at a post, and I see a model that I really like or something, and I don't post. Dunno why though... Nice concept, though there's not much detail. I'll be watching this one.

Just to show progress. I'm hammering out the basic shape of the thing. So far, I only have gotten to the front part and worked on this about half an hour, so hang tight.

another update on the model:

I've added the windshield and an intake for the thrusters. The circular objects you see on the side and bottom are there for balance and propulsion. The ones on the side are for fine tuning and keep the vehicle vertical by emitting shoots of air to propel the body in the opposite direction that the air is shooting. Make sense? There will be more on the rear of the vehicle and a bigger one on the bottom of the back facing the ground. It's basically all about Newton's Rocket. Check out http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/mars/technology/propulsion/ for where I got the idea. There's more updates to come. Unfortunately, I can only work on this a little at a time because of work....

just a quick update...

So... it's a jet-propelled hovercraft? Sounds cool, but would it actually work - it doesn't have the skirt hovercrafts usually have to keep the airflow directed. Seems that your little craft would skitter around for a moment before plowing nose-first into the ground.

But hey, it's probably based on some crazy future technology of directing air using gravitational fields or something, so keep going :D

The main Power will come from the back of the vehicle (not seen). The other thrusters are just there for directional changes. I'm not sure I would call this a hoverbike anymore as you do need that lil' skirt. Let's just call this crazy technology. You'll just see some occasional air poofs coming out of the smaller thrusters for helping out with the fine tuning. It's hard to explain right now I guess. I have trouble explaining my ideas with words. We'll see if the idea comes through in the end. :p

a side view....

I'll be working on closing up the void in the middle of the vehicle...then come the details...

Last update for the night. I need more input from you guys! Does anyone even care?

I filled in the void in the body where the driver would partially be enclosed. Ok, now come the details....

Does anybody care? Well, you should ask yourself that question. Looking at your posts, it doesn't seem like you've posted on anybody else's challenge. Why would they post on yours?

You get what you recieve. A lot of the big threads on this forum are due to people commenting on and helping other people with their work.

If you don't mind working in relative silence (usually what I do, because I don't spend a lot of time on the forum), just continue what you're doing. But if you want people to help you out, you'll have to start giving.

Cheers :)

Point taken.

Unfortunately, I only have so much time to work on my stuff and I really don't have much time to browse through all the entries with my dialup connection. BUT I will do my best to see what others are up to.

hey there Sandpiper..................Looking good.Smooooooooth.I think you are off to a great start.I can see very well designed curves already.Keep adding those ever important details and keep it smooth and bam,you will have a nice model.Keep working hard,we are all in this together.

Thanks for the kind and encouraging words Virtuoso. I'll keep plugging away at the details. I'm finding it difficult to model up details that will make sense to the design and that don't look arbitrary. What I've got so far are some headlights, some grid detail on the new curvy area in the middle, and the release valves where the air is shot out to propel the vehicle.

Wow, responses! I liked comments about the curves because that was what I'm going for here. Nice smooth eye-pleasing curves. I'm really trying to get this thing somewhere. I'm having a little designer's block as far as the details go. I'm one of those guys who doesn't like to model anything unless I'm sure I want it there. I'll do my best today to get this going! Stay tuned....

I'm starting to mess with materials and colors and all that. I have no idea how to do unwrapping for 3dsmax, but I would like to give the body of this thing a custom texture job. So if anyone can help me find some direction for doing some texturing on such a curvy object, let me know!:wavey:

Sorry for not updating lately. Of course, as always, my job has interfered with my attempts at getting a challenge done! A couple of all-nighters in a row really messes with your mind and creative process...I'll do my best to get something going again, but I've hit a wall with the texturing of this thing. I want to make a real nice custom map. Gotta figure out unwrapping....if anyone has any suggestions on my modeling, design, or help in regards to the texturing phase of this, please say something! Thanks in advance......

As I have said before sandpiper.......Very curvacious, well designed, with a sleek look.I say give this beauty the texture job it deserves, pull out all the stops.

Custom map all the way.I think this deserves it.

Hey I know know your a Maverick fan,but come give this Laker -Kobe fan a tip or suggestion at my thread sometime. As much as you think you know, you can always use as many eyes as posible and ideas are always welcome.

Kobe/Shaq and Payton perhaps.Set Kobe loose finally in the running game.Hehe,I know how much you are looking forward to that.:p ;)

OK map this thing custom all the way.I'll keep checking on you. As of now I can just cheer you on,your work is spot on clean.Shapely, with beautiful curves.Take care, don't be such a stranger.Stay in touch when you get a chance, the more eyes the better.Great modeling thus far Sandpiper.

Thanks again Virtuoso...I promise that I'll comment on your stuff ASAP. Look for it sometime this weekend. I always get too busy right in the middle of the challenges!

I do want to custom map this vehicle but don't know how really....will keep researching how....

Poor poor Lakers....Go Mavs!! Next year is our year (isn't that what every team says anyway??)---:)

Ok, everyone...I'm currently working on learning how to do this unwrapping uvw and texurizing stuff so I can make the vehicle look better. I'm also about to be on vacation for a week, so I'm gonna have to scramble when I get back in order to get this done in time! I'll post stuff when I think it's getting somewhere...right now, I'm hitting tuts and references to get this thing decent. :surprised

Hey SandPiper,

great job so far and nice curves indeed!! :buttrock:

Since I wanna see this vehicle all beautifuly textured, I suggest you go and have a look at the AWESOME
Michel Roger's Joan of Arc tutorial (http://www.3dtotal.com/ffa/tutorials/max/joanofarc/joanmenu.asp).

It explains the bases of UVW mapping (very useful) and how to texture a sword, a body (great curves here too!!!!), hair and so on.

It is very detailed and well explained.

Hope it helps. and good luck.
