I watched a behind the scene of digital domain, the one of the day after tomorrow.
On the website of digital domain, the behind the scene of feature film, second page, you can find the video.

it basically is a breakdown of the flood scene, in which they use a red, yellow and green color based water splash pass.I don't know how they use it. At first i thought it was a vector blur pass, but then i checked the final result and they seemed to appear same amount of motion blur. For light contribution adjustment, i don't think so. Because the colors are moving with the flood, which makes it a little bit odd.
do you guys know it? I'm really interested. if you know, please, post some comments.
Thanks a lot!

I have no answer, I' m also intrested in knowing why they have those colored particles... Anyone ?

Looks to me like a nearest neighbors/thickness pass. Could also be coding for two different particle systems achieved by different means (maybe first- and second-generation particles).

I haven't seen it (lazy :b) but is it not a render pass for compositer so that they can apply different treatment on each "side" fo particle result ?

i really appreciate your answer!
are you saying that they use different color to identify different particleShape? If it is, i get you~! but what will they use it for......

Well, I would guess that some of them are the main body, and the others are ones that have collided (and thus would be more aerated, and lighter). Could also represent the age of the particles. Who knows!

Maybe just colour adjustment passes to brighten or darken certain parts of the wave if needed.
