Hi All,

New to Maya, could use some modelling help:

What is the difference between creating a polygon cube and then using a Smooth Proxy, and using a subd's object as demonstrated here:

http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=63188&highlight=proxy

Which is better for a character modelling/setup workflow?

Thanks all. Please forgive the very basic question!

by using smooth proxy you can turn on off the smooth geometry any time you want therefore speeding up the display , its updates faster too.

Once you are happy , you can convert your low poly to sub-d and continue from there and take advantage of the sub-d features such as creasing , etc.

I tend to start with smooth proxy cause , sub-d's tend to get slow faster the more details you add , especially creasing. After you crease an edge and go back to poly mode it takes forever to update.

hope this helps
