View Full Version : RAM limits with blender?
oceanmovieclip 10-12-2008, 02:23 PM Hi there.
Are there any RAM limits with blender?
Should there be any reason why blender could or would close because of anything to do with that?

Only the limitation imposed by the OS. If you are interested in fluid sim, the best bet is to run it under Linux.

Are you referring to having too much or too little RAM? I believe that there is an upper limit to the amount of RAM that Blender can use, however the limit is high enough that this should not be an issue for most users. On the low end, Blender will run on very low spec systems, but if it runs out of RAM it can indeed crash altogether.

Im currently running Blender 2.46 64bit on Vista 64 and have 6GB ram.
On a 32bit OS i believe the limit on any single application is 2GB so you will need a 64bit OS if you want to use more.
You can find a 64bit version of Blender on www.graphicall.org and if what i hear is true (it may not be) there will be official 64 bit version of 2.48 for Windows (along with the current 64bit Linux versions) when it is released.
Hope that helps :)

2.48 is out, with also a vista 64 version. Be notified that the 64bit build still should be considered as somewhat experimental though.
