Hello all! So this looked like the best place to put this, but feel free to move it if its not. Basically I have been working on a server side mod for Team Fortress 2 for almost a year now, and as I get closer to finishing the code, I am focusing more on the visual aspects of it. I have already recreated two of the most popular Quake 3 maps (Q3DM17 and Q3DM06) but I have tried both using TF2 textures, and Q3 textures. Neither gives the feel im going for, which is a dark, but cartoony style.

So basically what I want to know is, I am okay with photoshop, cant do a whole lot. From what I can tell, cartoony textures (TF2) are harder to make than realistic looking ones. I haven't really even found any tutorials on how to take a reference image, and make it look cartoony. I am guessing these have to be done from scratch.

Here is an example of a wall texture from Q3 (one that is used a ton) that I want to convert over into a TF2 style. Its kind of almost that cell shaded look that I want, so I am wondering if I should attempt to do it, or just stick to the mapping and coding that im good at, and try and find someone else for it.

Also, is there somewhere on the CGSociety forums I can post that I am looking for a texture artist (paid/non-paid) to recreate some of these Q3 textures for my project? I didnt really see a good place for it.

Thanks!
Crimson

I love team fortress, spend far too long on it every day. I think you need to get rid of some of the detail in the mid tones, keeping the dark grout colours and wash out the detail in the mid and highlights. What you could try and do is duplicate the layer to a new layer in photoshop, turn it black and white and then use it to multiply over a new colour drawing. The colours are very saturated in TF maps.

Hope this helps. If you want me to have a go just say.

Cheers Dan

I know what your telling me to do, but I don't even know how to turn it black and white lol. (I can use text tool and brushes and thats about the extent). If you would like to try it out, I would be extremely grateful!

cutout-filter might help with the stylizing aswell, but i never played tf2 or even look too much at it, so :-/ :D

No prob. I'll have a go but not promising that I can do it exactly like you want. Have you got a higher resolution version of the texture as that one is only 256x256?

Here is a very quick (and I mean very quick) try. It might be a bit light for what you want but give me some feedback and I'll do some more.

It's double the size of original so it might need scaling down.

Hope OK give me a shout if you want changes. I'll be away until Wednesday night in rural west Wales so no internet but after that can do some more if you want.

Cheers

Oh that looks much better :) I will load it up in game now and take a look at it. Looks a lot less realistic but not too cartoony, which is perfect!

Excellent. could you give me a copy of the level when you finish it, or post me in the direction of the server it will be hosted on.

Nice one mate.

Definitely! I am still trying to figure it out a bit though. In Q3 I was looking at it and you can barely tell its only one texture, it doesnt seem to scale at all, but in TF2 it looks extremely repetitive. >_< Anyways, when I get that figured out I will post it up!
