After realizing that I have jumped in WAY over my head on two occasions, I think I have found something that I can do that is reasonably challenging. I am trying to paint a night scene with some castle ruins on a plain. No color yet, just values.
Values:

and the setup:

Any crits and comments are welcomed and encouraged. After all, I am here to learn form those who have vastly more knowledge than me.

Night scene take skill with lighting and coloring.

Why not a ruin on a plane in the morning? MUCH easier lighting, yet still dynamic, as morning light is pretty high contrast...

Why so much dead, empty space on the LH side of the canvas? The viewer need not see your vanishing point. You draw it out only so YOU know where to place proportion lines...

At this stage, you are not ready for complex landscapes. Simplify and hone your skills one bit at a time.
Crop this image to better center your subject.
Clean up your lines and sketch out the ruins with more detail. Especially where the ruins meet the ground, and the corners of the architecture.

Maybe even considering just painting a "real" image of a box, or a speaker, or a book, or something to work on your rendering skills...
