I am having trouble with the maya pole vector constraint. When I setup the pole vector I get some rotation on my base joint. I have already tried Aaron Holly's method but it doesn't work for me always. Is this problem caused due to joint orientation? How can this be corrected?

I cant be sure of ur situation but maybe when you set up your ik, your joint isnt properly oriented. Just may sure there isnt any values in your translation or rotation other than the channel that is pointing the joint. You can use whatever method like the orient joint tool or other orient joint script.

Mydrako, thanks for your reply.
The rotations on my joints are clean. The translate axis pointing down the chain is the only one with the values. I also cleaned the rotation axis fields and set a prefered angle. But sometimes when I create the pole vector constraint it gives some values to the base joint.

Cant really think of what could be causing it. Maybe you can upload the file somewhere if it is possible.

Set preffered angle is what creating the rotation values in joints (I don't know why it happens)...You can just manually move the pole vector controller and zero out the joint's rotations...

I found the answer on an older thread in this forum.
The orientation of the pole vector control object is what is causing problems in my case.

The SOLUTION is to point constraint the pv controller to the first and last joints [shldr and wrist] and then aim constraint to the joint in the middle [elbow]. Then translate the controller back and create the constraint on the ik handle.

Isn't that what Aaron Holly does?

I would not have thought it would be the orientation of PV so much... but i guess you learn something new everyday... My first guess would have been that the joints were not planner.

Aaron Holly's technique that I have seen is to orient the PV ctrl to the base joint of the chain and then aim it to the ik handle using an object for the up vector. That works but not in all cases.
The other method posted above seems to be working in every situation so far.

Yeah, I use the same method (point constraint to the hip and ankle, then aim it to the knee). I thought I learned it from Aaron Holly. Sorry about that, I may have gotten that technique from somewhere else, i guess. I like it works well.
