Hi everyone! I'm new around here and after looking around a bit I decided it's a good idea to start my own sketchbook thread.

I've been drawing for a while now and recently became quite interested in anatomy and figure drawing. Most of my experience is with pencils or acrylics and a few days ago I started trying out digital with my new tablet :)

I think the standard around here is probably photoshop and paintshop for 2d but I decided using gimp because I'm a big fan of the open source model (heh, and I cant afford the former).

Anyway! so far I tried the skull tutorial (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=351832) and the heads workshop (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=199&t=375031&page=1&pp=15). So here's what i've got:

Tempera on wood, 82 x 54 cm

you can find the original here (http://www.wga.hu/index1.html) if you're lazy.

What do you think? they're both WIP. Any feedback you might have could really help me out. :)

welcome!

what i noticed in all of your paintings so far, youre using too much white and black, nothing much in between. the background is completely black, further amplifying the contrast ...
the shadows on the forms are too light resulting in a muddy effect. part of the problem is because youre using a soft brush. this is a bad idea, especially if youve just started with ps. with hard brushes you can define edges and shadow-light transitions much better.

i didnt mean to bring you down ... really just pointing out some things you should definetly work on ... peace? :)
please post some of your traditional work ... would be interesting to see them :)

Hi, don't worry about it. I'm glad you commented so thanks for the critique! I'll try the hard brushes, a lighter background and avoid the whites and blacks. I hope I'll get to posting some traditional stuff soon too.

I tried a couple of quick sketches from the sketching thread. Each one took 15 minutes.

Thanks hidus :). Yeah I'm trying to make practice more of a daily thing...

Here's another head study, this time traditional. hehe, my sister was generous enough to lend me her camera.

I can see something isn't quite right with the eye... maybe they're too far apart?

hey Kubera

nice start with your SB

when i was watching your works i just thought about soft-round-brush, that you' re using in your paintings from first posts...for this moment i suggest you to leave that brush away and paint with hard-edged brushes.. i think it can help :)

keep it up

cheers

Thanks for the advise selphoo, you and shapemaster were quite right about the brushes. I tried using hard brushes and read this thread (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=199&t=369421&page=1&pp=15) about getting comfortable using the tablet. Here's the result:

Critiques are welcomed, be as harsh as you need :)
