Hi everyone... although I've been here for over a year or so, this is my first WIP thread. I just want to go ahead and let you all know first how much I appreciate the time you all spent looking and even critiquing the work. I'm hoping through the combined expertise and motivation which is abundant in this forum, that I will be able to produce a quality model in the end. (Because right now, I'm not really too happy with it. :p)

What I wanted to do with this model is pretty simple... it's the first time I have attempted to model a human, but I wanted to get some practice before starting an animation project I have in mind. Plus, I had studied more the rigging/animation part of the pipe while in school, so now I'm kinda catching up on the other parts (modeling, texturing, lighting, etc.) now in my free time. I started the head using Wiro's Subdivision Head Modeling tutorial (http://www.secondreality.ch/tutorials/modelling/head.html), and now I am going back and attempting to tweak the model to look more like me before adding the extra detail (and the ears). Like I said, I'm not all that crazy about it as it is now, but I am still proud of the work I've done so far (mainly because I am optomistic that it will get better ;) ). I'll get the questions out of the way, and then the images!

First of all, I do realize that the head from the side view is not wide enough... I planned to fix that before adding the extra detail and ears, but I felt that was a lesser problem than the facial structure.

My main concern is that I can't seem to match my facial structure just by using the reference images (and no, I'm not using the reference images strictly.. just to have handy while tweaking the model, because they don't seem to line up well). I feel like all of the detail so far is flattened near the front of the face, and the rest of it has no real structure to it. Also, to me, the face overall feels plastic. I'm not sure how to make it look more natural, so I thought I would show it here and see what kind of advice you guys and gals could give me.

I know I've seen way better stuff posted on here, and I hope to one day have that level of quality, but I guess everyone starts somewhere. However, don't be gentle because I suck... but do try to lend some advice where possible. I will be updating this thread as I fix the head, and I plan to add the body (although probably not modeled after my current one :p), hair and clothing, so I know this whole process will be chock full of questions from me. I just hope you guys don't get too annoyed with them! :) Thanks again for looking at my little project here, and any comments are welcome!

Not bad... I mean, I guess it doesn't look like you yet, but then again, you have hair... and eyebrows... and a goatee (sometimes)... but I'd say it look pretty good so far. But, I guess you are your own worst critic... but keep working on it... I'm sure it'll get there. :D :airguitar

Hey TIKIMON...I think you have made a great start. As you have requested there are a number of things I could point out but I will reserve my comments until your next update.
The pages below taken from one of the Loomis books describe the fundumentals in human male head thoery. Try to follow the method presented. As a begginer in head modelling , I think it is important first to model the planes of the face and then adapt a sutable topolgy to them. This will become second nature in no time and you will be able to modify your future models at any time of their evolution to fit these planes.

Ok, this is continuing to be frustrating. I still can't seem to get the proportions of the head right. In persp view, it looks too thin, but in front view, it looks way too fat. I am really open to suggestion at this point... although, I'd rather not start completely over from scratch. I will if I have to, but that would also be rather frustrating.

Anyway, here are the images of the progress (what little there is).

Sorry these are links instead of images, but I wanted to maintain the size of the image to better facilitate any suggestions on how to fix it. Thanks again for any help!! [/desperate plea for help]

hey dave! You're close! I would suggest you try modelling some stuff other than heads for a start. It'll give you some idea of form.Because to me,heads and humans are the hardest thing to make. But lookin good (good lookin too ) :scream:

but the mesh does'nt quite look like you yet.perhaps its too smooth?
