Running Mac Maya 3.5.1 and was going over a tutorial on correcting the local rotation on joints. I am able to rotate the XYZ for each joint with no problem, but once I have the correct axis like I want it, when I go back to object mode and select the joint to translate it, the gnomon doesn't change to new orientation. This is an issue mainly for a parent joint that I want to be oriented to the global XYZ orientation. The gnomon symbol doesn't update for me. Does an one know if its something I'm doing wrong or is it a bug in the Mac version of Maya?

I get around the problem by grouping the parent joint to itself. Now the gnomon XYZ orientation is correct. Just wondering......

in your joint tool options there are choices to use either local rotation or global. you probably would have wanted to set it to use global rotations.
as well you might want to turn off any specific roation order in the same option window.
you can probably still do this when you select the joint and go to the attribute editor.
