Title: 1972 Datsun 240Z
Name: Bill Wilhelm
Country: USA
Software: Maya, mental ray, Photoshop

This is my first model posted to a forum on CGSociety, and the first model I have tried to integrate into a background scene.

This has been an off and on project for a number of months now. Modeled in Maya and rendered with Mental Ray. Composite and touch up work done in Photoshop. Lighting and background image are by way of sIBL.

The model is all polygon, and I tried to stay as true to the original as possible. A few small deviations, like the carbon fiber hood and lack of fender emblems are my own personal touches.

I am still having a bit of a tough time with the marker lights, headlights, and producing the right mix of diffuse and specular for the tire textures. All in all though, I think it came out well enough.

I know it's another vehicle render, but critique/criticism are welcomed. Who doesn't want to get better by learning from their mistakes? Plus, I already know what nitpicky things I don't like about it.

Dude nice!!

Datsun FTW!!

really glad you chose to do this, it looks great.

maybe consider changing out the tires/rims. It looks kinda flat.

great job! keep at it!

Thanks for the comments so far. I too think that there is still something lacking in the tires. I just found a tutorial on sidewalls on another forum that I'm going to experiment with.

The rims are actually steel rims with hubcaps on them, just like they came from the factory. The texture on the sidewalls is also a bump map based on a photo of an original Bridgestone 175SR14 tire. At least this time I rendered out the tires as a separate mask pass. I tried to find a balance between detail and contrast. I'll be doing some more research for sure.

hey bill, great car selection, and nice modeling!

The tires definitely need more work, I also think the glass doesn't seem quite reflective enough. Last thing is a personal preference, maybe turn the front wheels just a little more?

Nice 1!

Excellent job, Bill ! Your model of the car and the engine are spectacular. I agree with the other posts on this forum as the hubcaps probably need to be curved to match the original cap. Do you have one as a reference? I can probably get someone to loan you an hubcap. The front windshield probably does need a little more reflection of the background. Feel free to reference the club photo gallery if you need some inspiring shots!
