View Full Version : Import from 3D MAX to Maya Using Bonus Tools 5.0
I have imported a 3d studio max scene into Maya 5 using bonus tools 5.0. All the objects shape (and some colours) are intact.
But when I dolly, roll, or zoom in the perspective view, it seems that objects seems to enter blindspots, where the objects disappear until you dolly out again to make it. Does anyone know why this is so?

Sounds like a clipping issue. In your perp. veiwport goto View>>Camera Attribute editor and increase the value for Far Clip Plane. Something like 2000 or even 5000 if the model is really large.
What happens is that the camera dosn't draw objects beyond a certain distance. This keeps your video card from having to draw everything in a scene. But if a model is larger then the clipping distance, you have to increase the clipping distance.
Thanks pyromania. Raising the camera far clip plane, as you suggested, to 5000 did the trick.

Yeah, why is that anyway.... if you export a scene from MAX to MAYA, the object is WAYYY TOO BIG.
And when you export a scene from MAYA to MAX, then it's Wayyyyy too small.
I've imported/exported using .3ds / .obj / .fbx and all show the same.
Any solution to this or do i have to scale it everytime :)
Thanks

Is it something to do with the default unit in each software?
You can change it if it is ...
yea, just differences in programs. :p
Wavefront apps just use a much smaller scale than Max by default...
Other differences include Maya using Y for it's up axis, whereas Max uses Z, so the importer/exporter plugin has to rotate the objects for you... it's no big deal tho ;)

You might want to double-check to see that you're using the same Units setup. Generic units in MAX are not the same as generic units in most apps. So I'd suggest setting both apps to metric and try the translation.
