Title: The Old Bones
Name: Oleg Serov
Country: Canada
Software: CINEMA 4D, Photoshop, Vue

The picture was inspired by the book of George R. R. Martin "A Song Of Ice And Fire". There was a moment there when one of the characters found a skeleton of a dragon in the desert. I wanted to depict that moment of the discovery.

The skeleton was modeled in Cinema 4D. The render was done in Vue. There was a very little afterwork in Photoshop. Basically, I just painted the traces of the hooves on the sand.

i like the idea but it lacks some execution. The skeleton looks too artificial, you should work on some bump or displacement map, and i think the teeth dont look right cause they have no hole to go into, so u should do a couple of extrudes or something to make those holes in the skull.

I have only one critique for this image, I think that the camera is really not working here. You picked a dead on shot, eye level with the dragon bones. Why? Because of that we as the viewer associate with the dragons size not the man on horseback. Lower the camera to his level, and we become his size, the dragon then becomes enormous and we get a sense of wonder from the image.

But if there is some reason you chose to place the camera where you did, and I am missing something, by all means, keep it that way.

...with the others. The other commentors, not the Others!

A wonderful story, I'm re-reading it now for my fourth time. Most of your bones and joints look great, aside from the tooth-socket issue which I think you can handle easily. But a displacement-map will make the difference of the world here! And to be honest, I find the skull to a bit thick and heavy? Dragon-bones need to be lighter, more birdlike but still strong...

But keep at it, this one's awesome and is looking good!

i agree with the above posts about some more bump...

also, since the body of the dragon has been there for obviously a long time, the muscles that allow the jaw to stay open and the claws to be elevated, are decomposed. if you are going for a more realistic look, then the head should be on the ground, as well as the bones in the hand.

the way you have it though gives it a more "aggressive" look, and perhaps that is what you were going for. it is cg, we can do as we wish!

keep it up!

I would like to thank you, guys, for your attention to this work and your critique. All your comments have been very helpful!!! :p

I guess, the teeth do need improvement. The same goes to the bump maps.

Speaking about the camera angle, believe me, I tried different approaches. Somehow, I like this one better though this is the matter of the personal preferences. I absolutely agree that the view from the eye-level of the horse rider would be very interesting too.

That is a good note about the jaw muscles. Before starting this project I did some research in the paleontology field. Usually old bones don’t look anything like this picture! But I did want to give the dragon more intimidating look. After all, realism is important but it is not everything. A believable lie is far better! :p

Probably, the skull IS a bit heavy. Next time I will make it differently.

To InfernalDarkness: I love George R.R. Martin too. Can't wait his next book "A Dance with Dragons". Too bad that it takes so long to finish it. Valar morghulis!
