Ok, so...how does Blender render over a network? Can I do it from within the app? Or does it require a 3rd party tool?...How large of a network does it support?

Blender supports a quick-n-dirty network animation render.

To do it, you need to:
- enable both "Touch" and "No Overwrite" in the render buttons
- set your rendered frame target path to a network path
- access your .blend file from the network on all the machines that you want to use
- start an animation render on each of the machines

All of the machines on your network will self-organize when it comes to animation frame rendering. They will each look at that network path to see what frames have been rendered (or are currently rendering) and start on the next one as soon as they are idle. Obviously, this does not split a single frame across multiple computers. Also, you have to start the render manually on each node.

If you're looking for an open source third party render farm package for Blender, check out "farmerjoe (http://blender.formworks.co.nz/index.pl?p=1)". I used it for my last short animation project. It's just right.
