View Full Version : apple or not to apple ? :)
Time to upgrade sooon :) I've heard some grate opinions about mac performance lately and was thinking to leave pc ship and go to mac one. I compared the prices for same config fro BOXX and MAC PRO :

Mac. You may go dual on a when you miss Windows applications, but not go dual with OSX on a PC whenn you miss Mac apps. Be sure to use a different partition when you do so, especially when using 3ds Max.

Apple.
Have bought one myself with OSX and Vista64 SP1 Ultimate on two seperate internal hardisks and it ROCKS !!
Choose to boot into either OS at startup via rEFIt.
Bought an additional 16gb from OWC and it is all the power I need.
With the additonal money you pay for a BOXX system you get a lot of techncial expertise, service and support etc. along with the hardware. Don't expect more than simple warranty handling etc. from Apple.
Cheers

I don't have anything against BOXX I'm using one together with theirs render nodes. I didn't pay for it (my boss did :). So I don't mind using those. But for myself I somehow don't feel spending this amount of money if I can have 2 pcs for that amount!

To be fair you can get PCs much cheaper than at BOXX though without the good support. Apple support is not the best to say the least... Everybody I know pays for the extra warranty ("apple care(?)) because they had some bad experience.

Um, I just did the comparison and with the 3.2Ghz CPUs , 4GB RAM, single system drive, & Quadro 5600 GPU the MAC PRO IS $200 MORE EXPENSIVE.
And the MAC Pro doesn't even include Windows!
Also, if you call a BOXX rep or dealer, you can get a better price than the retail price that is listed on the website.
2 Mac pros for a single BOXX?
Not on this planet.

also, if you want a "gaming" card to make more comparisons to an online MAC Pro configuration, you can call into BOXX and get a quote for a system configured with a ATI Radeon or Nvidia Geforce card...

Apple is the single most expensive brand there is for computer hardware. IMO, the only reason to ever use a computer from apple is if you absolutely need to run software thats MacOS exlusive.

Maybe your planet isn't the same as mine... I dont have the exact numbers on me, but my recent purchase was roughly:
3GHz x8 core
16 gigs ram
4TB harddrives
gf8800gt
UK apple reseller £2700
UK boxx reseller £5500

sorry man -
Your configuration as listed above as of today from the UK Apple store is 6049 British Pounds. You must know somebody at Apple to get the sweetheart deal you got!
The US price for a BOXX configuration for the same exact stuff is roughly $8800 - that's about 5050 Pounds. -about 1000 Pounds less than the Mac Pro.
-Not trying to start a platform war here, but you might want to double check your math...

Actually, i didn't add the VAT before, so your UK price for a BOXX would be about the same price or slightly less than a Mac Pro.

A Mac Pro with 2x3.0GHz quad CPU, 2GB RAM, an 8800GT and 320GB hard drive costs around £1990.64 (exc VAT) direct from Apple.
16GB of 800Mhz FB ECC Ram and 4 x 1TB SATA hard drives can be brought for around £700 (exc VAT), so if they avoid Apple's inflated prices for additional hardware then a reseller could build a Mac Pro for around £2700 + VAT which would match imashination's stated specification.
edited to correct typo.

I suppose you could do the same with a new BOXX and come out about the same...

The thread starter lives on Cyprus...
I've heard, not my own experience, that to get a warranty repair by BOXX you would have to ship it back to the US.
Had a friend where the PSU broke, 3 weeks without a workstation.
I had a PSU break down on my Mac Pro, down to the locale apple reseller (no Apple store here, just like on Cyprus) and it took 3 days, they didn't have a spare one at home so it was shipped from Amsterdam or UK same day I called the reseller.
When it comes down to being productive and the thread starter points out that money is not the issue (even though you keep arguing the price) let's get down to productivity.
and I must say I am really happy with my MacPro and the features of OS X (Automator, Quicktime Pro etc.)
My friend with the BOXX loves his BOXX, very good Windows machines.

Well resellers are usually considerably cheaper, my quotes were from your uk boxx reseller, escape studios and from an apple reseller.
I *wanted* the boxx systems, but when I show the bean counters that one is double the price of the other. Theyre not authorising the expensive one im afraid.

I configured mine online (at BOXX) and ordered through Escape, the price was more or less identical to the online price. Actually the sales guy got me a better spec for the same price because of hardware upgrades that weren't shown on the site.
I keep hearing how Mac Pro's are cheaper but I haven't been able to configure an Apple for less than an equivilent PC, BOXX or otherwise. The lower spec'd Apples are quite competitive but as soon as you start adding another processor, extra RAM, another HD, support...unless you look on ebay.

I was under the impression, according to the support documents, that replacement components can be shipped to you along with details on how to return the faulty part. If it's found that the part isn't faulty, you get charged...fairly standard stuff.
Honestly, if it was the case that you had to ship a component to another country for repair or buy a replacement for the same price from the guy down the road, I'd do the latter.
I think for now I will get ASUS dual proc mainboard with 2 xeons and it will cost me in total 1500$ :)

BOXX support ships out replacement parts the same day you call with an issue. Over night air.
Of course, if you really want to build your own system and don't mind supporting it yourself, ASUS does make pretty good system boards...
Good luck!
