i've been using maya on xp for the last 6 months and its pretty stable.
make sure your friend has plenty of ram. xp tends to eat up memory.

I know this isnt the topic at hand...but I really dont see why any CG artist would switch to XP. I think 2k handles memory better, and XP is just seems like a lot of useless fluff.
I have heard a few people complain how XP has conked out on them halfway thru a render because of its ram hogging, so I personally prefer to stay with "ol reliable"...either NT4 or 2k.
In the end its all up to the users preference, but I wouldnt suggest doing the switch over if you have a project deadline..wait until you have a free block of time so you can test.

Maya works very well in XP ....no crushes and stuff
BUT.....every now and then you will have to restart Maya because of some refresh problems with the outliner in heavy scenes...also you have to switch your desktop to classic view otherwise your VGA card will have biiiig problems
heh, funny, also NT4 is better at handling ram than W2k,
seems that microsoft just makes it's OS's worse and worse,
bah.
