View Full Version : Goodbye to Arms (maybe not WIP)
H. Ikeda 06-08-2003, 11:14 AM Hi all,
This is just a picture. These 'arms' may be interpreted as weapons literally, or results caused by weapons realistically. Or, you may think this a tomb of 'arms'(weapons, still alive?). The meaning is up to you. Comments & criticisms are appreciated.

Anyhow, 'Farewell to Arms'!

funky dude. I don't get the impression that they are falling though.
I think you want it to look like they are being droped. From what I can see they look more like they are levitating. Try and give them more of a dropping feel. Try rotating the ones in the air a bit, and the ones on the ground might need a bit more of a jumbled bouncy look.
nice job so far.

Thanks JIII for the comments.
Yes, they are rather floating. Although they are thrown away here, some of them are still alive and floating ('arms' may be immortal?).
But the association of 'farewell' -> falling sounds natural, so I'll try a version of falling arms.
Cheers,

i think what hurts the most is the lighting. you have a good sense of dispair now, but i had to really look to tell it was a well. you might try radiosity.

HI. I took them as floating. Even with the pile below they look like they are slowly going into the pile-which works for me. I think it is a strong pic and it is nice to see a more "fine art" theme. I have not ventured into that realm with my 3d much yet. Granted I went to an art school so I have an understanding of this I just keep getting interested by robot or alien or something. I look foreward to taking this on when the interest comes around again. Back to the crit-I agree with geoffb-radiosity would be cool, but two spots fillinn in just a little of teh sides may be enough.Great work. I really like it.:)

geoffb and Wilson 3d: Thanks a lot for the comments and the criticisms.
Additional lights or radiosity... ok, it might be worth trying.
So, next would be falling and radiosity versions.
Thanks again,:)

disarmed? i like the idea behind the scene very much. how about adding some kind of random? one arm could have dropped a bit aside and those falling arms are a bit in a row i think. maybe some more noise or dust in the air would add to the atmosphere. but i like it as it is. an those arms are falling, i promise :)

So is you next picture going to focus on being defeated? j/k :)
Can't wait to see the radiosity version!

Thanks Siddhy and Sokowa for the comments and the encouragement.
Sorry to have kept you waiting. Additional lights seem effective rather than radiosity, because the wall is lit not so much. So a spot light and an omni light are added with somewhat warm colors.
A little bit hope in the picture?

Hi. I sure don't want to discourage you because as you know going back and doing these extra touches is what turnes your projects into portfolio pieces. But I don't see a difference. Did both pics get updated so they are the same? I scrolled up and down the page comparing. If so I would be interested in seeing a version with even more fill lighting but I imagine you tried that. Keep up the good work!

Wilson 3d: I know your encouragement. Thanks again.
But any difference? It's surely a subtle difference, because that's basically a dark picture, I think.
I could see a small difference in my monitor (some arms have slightly warmer colors), but it may be too small to be seen with some monitor settings.

Wow. Now I can see the difference. I am on a different monitor too. I swear on the other I could not see it but now I can. The new lighting does give it that extra pop. I like warm the color on the arms much better.
Just a few comments, try upping the bump on the walls, and if possible make a bridging kind of thing for the wall and the floor. Don't know it thats water or what but it just kinda meets the wall. Which is not really all that natural, if you get my meaning.
Hi Ikeda,
have you ever thought of putting your arms in an emitter? Could give you some more randomness on the falling ones - I think they are to neatly aligned now. Very nice mood - maybe try to exclude the rock from one of the lights, so that it doesn´t become the center of interest. Just a couple of thoughts - I like where you are taking this - keep us updated,

Thanks a lot for your nice suggestions.
JIII: Ok, I've increased the bump scale and add a kind of ladder on the dark side (because it's not the center of interest).
pit: I've excluded the rock near the arms from some of lights, together with adjustments of the main spot light. And I've never thought of particles for arms. I was trying Dynamics for arm objects and it was frustrating. :)
Ok, the next I'd like to try would be a falling version with particles.
Now the picture is such as:

Maybe this is the last one...a falling version.
Thinking Particles has been used and stopped before the lowest arm reaches a pile of arms, because particle-particle collision is not set. And further arms have been added around the pile, which implies a resultant bouncing.
Again Goodbye to Arms.
