View Full Version : Intel/Nehalem/Xeon naming confusion and future releases?
combination 10-05-2008, 01:56 AM I am completely confused about all the new gear that is coming out from Intel. I am using AMD Opteron Dual core 285 (2.6GHZ) PC and looking to budget for a new machine that will give me a big boost in rendering speed. I am willing to wait till next year if I have to.
I hear that there are Intel Xeon 6/8 core Nehalem architecture based cpus coming out. What I can't work out is when will these hit the market and what will they be called? Their naming scheme is so bloody confusing. When will they will hit under $1000 mark? Mirror ball anyone?
Edit- Future of computing looks bright and expensive :-L (http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/intel_officially_launches_sixcore_xeon_processors_boasts_50_performance_boost)

We will be releasing our Nehalem-based workstations in Q1 of 2009.
We currently have early engineering samples in house and are vigorously testing this new platform.

Will these be four core ones or greater?

dual-quadcore at first

This is fairly recent:

No mention of any 8 core processor releases at this point in the game from Intel, or any manufacturer. It might be in your best interest to upgrade rather than waiting since your current workstation is pretty far behind. Current AMD platform (F/1207) will have an upgrade path to 6 cores per socket at the end of life assuming motherboard manufacturers maintain the BIOS for the boards. Not sure if Intel will use the same platform or not for next generation Xeon processors.
From maps I've seen in the past, 8 core processors were scheduled by AMD and Intel for 2009 release. However that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. Cheers!

Ouucchhhh! Opteron 285s still rock. You hurt their feelings. I know they are not current and ageing but they are still holding up ok...ish. I mainly do still renders so they work when I sleep.

I read some where that they will have hyper threading or something similar so a quad core will show up as 8 core in the task manager. Maybe I was having a dream. Thanks for the link btw.
Another handy link to compare the current available Intel Xeon Cpus (scroll all the way down) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Xeon_microprocessors)
If my understanding is correct then a Quad core Xeon can be used in 2+ socket MOBO but what is the difference between 3000, 5000 and 7000 Xeon Quad core series (apart from the price)? Can 3000, 5000 and 7000 series all be used in two socket MOBOs?
For example-
Quad-Core Xeon X3370 is 4 x 3000 MHz
Quad-Core Xeon X5365 is also 4 x 3000 MHz
Quad-Core Xeon X7350 is also 4 x 3000 MHz
How do you decide which to pick? 7000 series means faster?

oh yeah...thanks for reminding me. Did I mention that with hyper threading turned on, this dual cpu Nehalem system presents the OS and applications with 16 cores ?
yay!

The 3XXX series are for single socket systems, the 5XXX are for dual socket systems, and the 7XXX are for many socket systems. They are not interchangeable with other series systems that I know of. Someone correct me if I'm wrong please.
Chances are for a 3D workstation you'll be most interested in either a dual socket Opteron system or a dual socket Xeon system with 5XXX series processors. I hear you on the old Opteron, I've got an Athlon X2 3800 system at home that I do some motion graphics on that still gets along pretty good. My primary workstation at home is a dual socket Opteron system though (dual Opteron 2352, 16 GB), *wink, wink*. Cheers!

Makes sense, thanks.
