its called "backface culling", under "preference/polygons", there you can turn it on off or when you make a polygon object go into the att. editor and look under "Mesh componet Display"

dont you love when people reply to your questions, which you would really just like to know an answer? instead you get a scurrilous reply.
if that selection method dont work in your viewport. were working in maya 5, and i turned on backface culling in my viewport i still was selecting behind my faces. go to custom poly display and turn on back face culling. that did it for me, plus you can make that permanent if you go to settings preferences, pref and turn it on so its like that everytime for your polygons. ciao

this is definetly not a stupid question. Backface culling is not made very easy with Maya. With 3ds Max, its just a checkbox but in maya you have to fiddle through the menu system, and even then it only works half the time:thumbsdow . I've discovered that the easiest way is to use the 'Paint Selection Tool' under the 'edit' menu. It is great for making complex selections and it ignores backfaces as well.:applause:
