adsky2 06-08-2003, 06:52 AM Actually Im not going to do some really really long hair, and im not going to animate it.So what is the best solution to get the most realistic result?
I've heard that paintfx can do it,but people said it looks unrealistic, isnt it?
I know fur can do short hair...so is it possible to do unanimated middle to long hair too?

No plugins? Definitely PFX
GMask did a very useful tutorial some time back on this one (tutorials ----> www.highend3d.com), as did Duncan Brinsmead (aliaswavefront.com)

You can get realistic looking hair with paint effects, but you need to get the shadowing parameters right. It is also easier with Maya5.0. Use the new thinLine brushtype and render with pfx oversample and pfx post filter on. Make sure the brush has "cast shadows" on and that there is also some real geometry in the scene that also casts shadows. Use depth map shadows and turn off mid dist mapping on the light. Turn off dmap width focus and manually set the focus as tight on the hair as you can. The shadow depthmap resolution should be very high for your primary light, but can be low for secondary lights( I would avoid ambient lights and lights without shadows ). To make the hair somewhat translucent increase the dmap filter size( which blurs the shadow not only sideways, but also in depth ) and increase the dmap bias( which pushes the shadow away from the light ).
Without self shadowing, the hair will look fake and glowy.
The thinline method on the brush also allows for multi streaks, which can dramatically speed up the render( by like a factor of 20), especially if lightAllStreaks is off. On can also use the multistreak effect for things like hair clumping at tips, by adjusting the spread values.

I dunno much about it but Maya 6 has hair built in.
A friend of mine showed me it on his laptop. Simple as. He added hair to a ball, and it fell into place. Less than 5 minutes working time. Looking forward to upgrading.
