Say i finish a character model, which has many mechanic parts and pieces stuck together (eg. arms, legs, etc...). I always wonder how you animate the character? I suppose you group parts that make up the arm together right? Then wat? Do you rotate the arm around manually and then move it into the right spot again? OR do you use some external programs and define which parts are the joints, and then animate from there?

Hope you get what im asking.

thnx

The process of animation really varies according to what software you are using.
Please post this question in the animation forum, or in the forum for the program you are using.

At any rate, you should read your software manual.

I noticed you've been reading up on books in the LightWave forum - if you are a LW user, you should read the animation chapters in your manual, they are pretty extensive. You're also been reading stuff in the Max forum, and Max has one of the most thorough manuals out of all the 3D programs.

People often overlook their manuals in favour of other books, but for me it's always the first place I look :)

Yep thnx.

I was doing 3d a year ago, and sort of stopped for programming. Now i plan to switch to 3d ( can't resist when i see all the great images ), and want to pick a program to learn. Basically, im having trouble on choosing between lightwave, Maya and 3ds max. I've noticed that they produce the best looking images on the net, and i want to learn the program with the best documentation and resources, hence my searching of books :p
