Hello everyone in the CG Talk Community..... I have been lurking here for a little while (every since that awsome mouse made out of organic parts was on the front page of the [H]), but this is my first post..... by the way, i figgured that this would be the proper section for this kinda thread, but if not someone let me know, and i'll try to get it moved, thanks....
I had a question about cell shading, i am working on some pics for one of my friends who is a hardcore Invader Zim fan, and i am really unclear on the process of cell shading, and i was hoping one of you awsome artist out there could help me out.... I was hoping that you coulld explain (or give links to sites that) the whole process..... I have never got that into this style because it its far to undetailed for my tastes, but i suppose learning new things is always good, huh..... I am by no means a newb with CG art so i will understand if you explain it in a technical manner (i have been doing it for about 5 years i think)
is there any progs that are better for this, even though i don't think there would be..... just any usefull info would be a great help for me, and thank you very much in advance.....

P.S. and thank you to that person that did that awsome mouse, that allowed me to find this forum full of really cool, incredible artists..........

which software are you using?

there are couple of different ways to do it in each software.

I'll move this post to the max forum. You'll probably get your answer there.

If you're using Max 4 and want to do cel shading, you're in good company. There are a few excellent options commercially and also some tutorials (unfortunately, I don't have the links right now) for creating shaders on your own. I think Niel Blevins wrote a tutorial on this. Anyway, commercially, there is Illustrtate 5 (www.davidgould.com , I think). It's a very powerful cel-shading plug-in for Max.

But also, there's Cartoon Reyes (www.reyes-infografica.net). I haven't used Cartoon Reyes, but there is something that I really like about the line work in the samples that they show from "Runaway". The color and line work looks just awesome. Not to mention the character design. Bye the way, does anyone know how to get in touch with the guy who designed these characters...Juan Solis? I assume he's in Spain? No?

I believe that Cebas is also working on a new cel shader.

And there is still The Incredible Comic Shoppe for Max 3.1., I think.

If you want to do it yourself without a plug-in, maybe someone could dig up the links to the different tutorials out there.

Good Luck

I discovered a very easy way to make cell shading in realtime.

This is what you do..

1) Clone the object you which to cell shade.
2) Scale the new object by a factor of 1.10
3) Apply a black material
4) Invert all face normals.

An example of this in realtime can be found here..

http://www.turntool.com/index.php?showobject=true&objectid=43&pageid=32

made a Kennett Fejer using a new web plugin called TurnTool.

in max....

use a gradient ramp:
change the interpolation to 'solid' and the gradient type to 'lighting'

::see old example::

Both cool techniques I'll have to try. That turntool image looks pretty darn good.
