April 22, 2003 - Today's Hollywood Reporter scoops that Sony Pictures is in final talks to acquire the film rights to the popular PlayStation 2 game The Getaway. The actioner would be produced by Sony's Screen Gems banner, the mid-sized film unit behind last year's Resident Evil game-to-film adaptation.

According to THR, the film could get underway early next year with a release set to coincide with a video game sequel. Both are expected to drop some time next year. No deals have been finalized, but things are expected to fall into place without much drama, since all of the parties involved are owned by Sony.

The Getaway, released for the PS2 in January, was published by Sony Computer Entertainment America and developed by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe and Team Soho.

The game is regarded as one of the most cinema-ready titles for the console. It has nearly 90 minutes of cut scenes, it's well-acted, and it looks great. The story centers on Mark Hammond and Frank Carter, two men on opposite sides of the law who are both out to bring down London's legendary crime boss Charlie Jolson.

Brendan McNamara, director of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe says, "We approached the development of the game in the same way as you would a movie – from writing the script, building real sets and hiring professional actors – fusing game and film production techniques into one medium. Our goal was to create a videogame as culturally significant as film, and The Getaway delivers on that promise."

On the plus-side, I've played the Getaway, and I have to say that that game played just like a movie. So the transition isn't going to be that difficult. They could pretty much just take the script from the game, add a bit of spit-and-polish (most importantly better dialogue) and some good actors, and they'll have a good gangster flick. They should get Guy Ritchie (of "Snatch") to direct.

The game rocked. A bit too short (I finished it in about 8-10 hours), but loads of fun. It was like GTA, but with with a much more coherent storyline, better graphics, great cut-scenes and more realistic action. You don't have the same "freedom" as you do in GTA (in terms of randomly carousing around the city and wreaking havoc). Although there is a "free ride" option once you complete the game that allows you to traverse the amazingly accurate reproduction of London's streets.

The one issue I had with the game was it's lack of a UI. The developers wanted to make it so much like a film, that they intentionally avoided any visual cues that would take you out of that mindset. In a way, it did make the experience more realistic, but the absence of a map, navigation (other than tail-light blinkers), health/ammo meter, and most importantly the inability to change views while driving (or even have a "rear-view" mirror) did get a bit irritating at times.

Personally, I felt the game pushed the realism aspect so far that it sacrificed the fun factor.. the majority of the time it just felt like frustration instead of enjoyment.

And in some cases, it was taken so far that it wasn't even realistic anymore.. I.E. putting your back up against a wall for long periods of time to heal. That didn't feel any more realistic than eating a floating chicken.

I loved the game, a bit repetitive but great. And I think it isn't so short since you have two stories in one, Mark Hammon and a police officer (forgot his name), so you see his side of the story. But back to the point: The acting was AWSOME! The characters were the most credible I have ever seen in a videogame and even in a whole lot of movies. I sure hope the same actors are used for the movie (since the 3D characters were based on real people as far as I know), and the swearing as well hehe

Lets just hope it wont be the same "caliber" as super mario bros. was and many other fiasco's of movies based off games.

Just as long as I don't have to build the characters all over again...

that game is even cooler if you actually know london as well, its like 'wow, theres centre point, and theres the queen, and theres all us brits living in our castles and drinking tea'

seriously tho, amazing game. i loved the lack of UI, such a cool idea. looked amazing on my brothers massive telly too, which alot of games dont

and well done sasquatch! cant wait for the sequel!
