View Full Version : HMC #17 Star Wars SteamPunk - Vader
sapienz 10-02-2008, 03:10 AM Decided to bite the bullet and attempt some sculpting for this challenge, keeping away from my usual hardsurfaced entries.
I've seeked permission and decided to try a design concept by AndrewLey (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?userid=42606)
For those who are interested in his other work - here is his CA sketchbook (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=42514&pp=100)

Man, that Vader concept is stunning. Andrew Ley is one of my favorites on the Conceptart board. He is a great artist.
Sapienz, I wish you all the best for your work on this. I´m totally confident, that you will do a great job.
Thumbs up and bring it on!!

That is a nice choice of concept, I have'nt seen this on conceptart b4. I cant wait to see you model this, after seing your great ironmonger diorama, have you got the yes to go ahead yet. I have to agree with you farazmobin definately should be in every HMC, I hope he joins in this one as well.

churned out a mesh in mudbox for me to visualise the helmet's form better, the sides looks alrite but i think the front view needs abit more pushing. feels kinda boring atm

The concept is simply amazing!
let's see what the modeling will turn up to. I never worked with mudbox and let's hope you can keep the style of mechanism out of the concept.

brought back to max for basic retoppo + rough blocking for the rest of the body, will bring back to mudbox for more reshapping.
Nothingness> I'll probably be leaving the hardsurfaced obj to max. I'm still quite new to sculpting so getting those hardsurfaces to work out nicely will be quite time-consuming for me.
The garments / fabrics will be handled by mudbox and painted in ps.

roughed out the body proportion, will be doing retoppo + insignia over the week
Since you are roughing out proportions, I gotta say he looks too thin and tall now. I'd scale down the body a little and the legs quite a lot. Will look better IMHO.
I like how you sculpt details first, looks like an awesome way to preview the details!

really like the helmet buddy hardsurface in zbrush is really tough, and it looks like you got a good start....if your are doing all hardsurface in zbrush,i would suggest using pinch brush with and without the alt key.. try it out on a shpere to see it operation. and if you have time use polyboost or other suface modeling tools to build faces over the high poly in max to get a clean mesh flow with all the difficult geomertrical shapes that are only possible in zbrush..
also im crying that i am going to miss this hmc...some really amazing concepts. but im really busy in some work and maybe if the work turns out all ok i might join in by the 17th or something.

dds> i think u are right, the proportion of the concept was kinda stylised, i'll do a freeformdeformation in max and see well that will go. I really like how your guile went...
The Huge C curved pose is definately working for me.
Just on a curious note. why is he missing a boot?
faraz> I'm using mudbox. I'll use the pinch brush sparingly, kinda noticed the baked normals seemed abit creased at joints. Maybe its due to bad polyflow... I'll be redoing the hardsurface in max, i've been really curious abt polyboost since your ABC warrior. Is it really that good?
Do come and join in the fun if you can find the time :bounce:

Sapienz! Man, that rocks!! God, I love that helmet. Great modeling you´ve done now. I was so wondering, why you started in Mudbox with your hardsurface stuff, but now I see, that it was obvious a good underlay for the retopo in Max.
The boots are killer too. Great!
Thumbs up and keep going that quality and we will see a masterpiece in the end!
I´m sooo looking for this one!

yeah its a nice yet vague concept, quite a bit of guess work + research needed.
hopefully i'll be able to deliver and do justice to the sketch.
Do join in if you can find time, it will be fun
ps. did the boots reminded you of anything? ;)

not exactly a real progress, but more like a shamless advert for "you know what"
since i'm not supposed to be doing personal stuff during office hrs, i decided to spend some time to do some software research which every other maxer seemed to know and love.
I'm really starting to see why its so well-liked.

ignore the hair. its a very rough meshing

Coming along nicely. The head is alright but doesnt seem to resemble Hayden - though the Hair helps to make him recognisable.
Keep going!

Great progress on the detailing. Still not sure about the helmet though. And not sure but aren't we supposed to show the model off without textures? Or do you just use them as a guide to model?
cheers and happy modeling

woops, didn't see the last page.
anyway, about the face, i think the eyes are what's wrong. They are too high and i think they should get inward a little as well.
Or wait, could be the eyebrows that are too low. Then i'm also not sure about the upper part of the nose. And In this last case the ears definately needs to move up. Top part needs to end at the eyebrows.
Also please do something about the ears  i know you'll hide them but for modeling's sake
cheers

Due to work commitment, i will most likely be unable to finish this challenge on time.:banghead:
I've been slapped with 3 deadlines in the coming 2 weeks or so and finding it really tough to juggle between work commitment and participating in this challenge.
I'll post my current progress when i can find the time to do so...
Best of luck to everybody thats still going strong with the force ;)

Jeff> Don't worry, i'll be finishing him up when i get done with office work.
I'll need to check my schedules for that big challenge.
But i'll most likely be spending the remaining mth or so getting all of my stuff polished up and preparing a short reel for siggraph asia sometime around dec.
