View Full Version : Cinematic Game Icons-Environment-Pancreas
Pancreas 06-07-2003, 07:57 PM Hi, long time since last 3D challenge, I feel rusty.
My idea is to make a medieval city environment, in a comic style, as big and full with details as I can. It could be an environment for an adventure game, a genre I always loved, those classics never die: Monkey Island Saga, Legend of Kyrandia, Simon the Sorcerer, King Quest...
For the image style and composition I have in mind some Kirby´s wonderful drawings for Discworld and screenshots of Alexandria from FF IX.
I don´t have a sketch to follow, just started in max doodling, creating buildings and merging them toghether.
These are renders from this morning:
test1 (http://free.hostdepartment.com/P/Pancreas3D/t1.htm)
test2 (http://free.hostdepartment.com/P/Pancreas3D/t2.htm)
test3 (http://free.hostdepartment.com/P/Pancreas3D/t3.htm)
(I´m hosting in a free server and I don´t know my bandwith limit, so better to save)
And this is the image so far (original resolution 1000x600, wide screen format).
test3 (http://free.hostdepartment.com/P/Pancreas3D/t4.htm)

Nothing better than woke up with good replies! Thanks!
@ Hexodam, I think I´ve been working about 14 hours, I´m quite slow and I have to model, texture and light every object and merge them to the final image, a quite tedious process.
Here´s a smooth wireframe:

i just had a look at the higher quality image on the challenge site.. there is no doubt the final image will be nothing short of amazing! you have a very personal style and i like it..
it is a little too colorful in my opinion, i think it would look better if the lighting was more unified - but that's really just personal taste i guess
btw: could you post a screenshot of just the shaded model, so we can see what is modeled / what is textured, would be interesting to see your process behind this

That's nice.It would be nice to see some close-up details of the objects, windows, etc,,,,,,
As Fist said the lighting needs to be more unified. But in time that will come I hope.It seems abit fuzzy,a hi rez shot really is needed here.
But still it's looking nice, interesting choice for this challenge.Any characters for this challenge too?
Keep up the good work.

good try and has potential.......Bu tit would be great to have more mood(lighting) and better composition. After you are trying to sell something!

@ fist: I agree with you about the number of colors. I try to make oranges/browns more prevailing, but there are so many colors in a city... About lighting: I have in mind a dawn sunny light, with an orange hue, and cold blue shadows. However I´ll adjust colors in postproduction.
And here the screenshots you asked for: click me, I´m an hyperlink! (http://free.hostdepartment.com/P/Pancreas3D/t5.htm)
AS I´m currently working on the foreground of the scene, I´m putting more time on modelling than textures (there are 3558 objects but only 60 different materials).
@Steveyola: Thanks, here are some details (from a 2000x1200 render).I´m an hyperlink too! (http://free.hostdepartment.com/P/Pancreas3D/t4.htm)
As you can see by the holes between objects and overlaping meshes I´m entrusting more in quantity than quality. Those small bugs won´t be seen in the final image I hope (1000x600 a nice windows desktop size with empty spaces above and beyond for icons).
A character? Mmmhhh maybe a big and red one, if there´s enough time...
@DimitrisLiatsos, wildsheepchase, InnerVortex, Asgar: thanks very much! Lots of beerchug icons for you!
@eshiu: You´re right, till now the image has been growing without planification, so I´ve drawn a quikie sketch of my final idea (see attachment, you won´t believe it, but it´s drawn with a wacom! and I´m not drunk!)
The point of view is settled in a high position, so the horizon level will be aprox in the middle of the image. The green tower is the center of the composition, different color for contrast from the background. The left side of the picture will be more open and deep, so a river and a bridge will be seen. There are two diagonal lines (marked with the empty spaces, the streets) wich take the eye from the sides to the bottom centre of the image, the base of the tower, so the eye path is closed.
The light source (the sun) is behind and above the camera, I am aiming to a 10:00 a.m. summer light (but not too strict)

It's good that you keeping aware of the composition. Just be aware of what the viewer is going to see first (first read). I'm also not sure that dead space on the top will read right but I will have to see the final result before I comment more. Hope to see it done soon!

Ooooh, nice! :scream:
I especially like the green tower in the center. And everything just has a great feel to it... Looks like it came right out of a Pratchet Discworld novel!
Did you try rendering it with an orthographic camera? It might give it more of a computer game look. (what software are you using)
P.S. I am also working on a game environment from the same top down (3 quarters) perspective (link is in my signature)... But mine is in a totaly different environment - a desert. So I can convince myself that yours isn't better, it's simply different. :D
Keep posting, I'll keep checking.

Being an architect I can appreaciate this as much as anyone. I like the plan, the details look nice, pleasant.I think you can play with views when finished, but it is a very good idea to get at least a "good" idea on the angles now.
Perhaps when you have a more than confident idea of the final angle at least for the most part you can then add some extra detailing, even more intricate near the camera and front part of the shot.
Looks very nice Pancreas, please give a few more up close details if possible as well.
Keep going it's a pleasure to look upon.

I know I've mentioned it before, but this pics really feel like they are right out of Discworld... I can just picture Rincewind on top of that tower, and Lugage running up the stairs on all those little legs.

Truly beautiful work you do.
What occured to me first is that you've managed (with your style and talent) to create a 3D environment that doesn't have that clean and perfect 3D look. That's always very commendable in my opinion. I love it so far..... and so close too, lol.

Very nice look, quite clean, nice deatils, interesting place to look upon.A nice sweeping view or fly-through too would be nice. But I understand this creations purpose, and you have done a very nice job with it Pancreas.
Perhaps another view/angle would be nice as well. But in the end I like your creation quite abit, fine job.

Buff, keep on working, but with this heat I´m sloooow...
Sorry mates, i can´t show you any other view (street view or back view) just becouse the scene is only modeled what you see, the rest are only boxes to cast shadows. It would be impossible to manage a full detailed scene rendereable from any angle, I have to keep the poly number manageable, (and it´s quite difficult right now, it takes more time to save than to render).
Another building, I have to start the Turbo if i want to finish in time...

You've just won a place on my desktop. This turned out sooooo good and not only that, but there is nothing else like it in the comp. Most people (myself included) have just used this as excuse to do another character, but you have created something that really belongs in a game. Well done dude!!
Only comment, would be that the clouds could use a bit more work maybe.

hey pancreas, just wanted to drop by and say that i love your final
i know this won't help now, but i think the perspective of your painted background is off, with such a top down perspective on your 3d scene there shouldn't even be a horizon visible, or am i mistaken here?
it's just.. it looks like the 3d part is hovering over the background :wip:
anyway, great piece with a very artistic feel
Pancreas
07-20-2003, 09:38 AM
Dimitris Liatsos, Ionized thanks very much! Absolutely agree about the clouds, i wanted a cartoon look with a real rendering, result: white stains on blue. Yep, maybe there aren´t many environment entries this months, but for the subject "cinematic game icons" seems more suitable a character (nobody remembers Tomb Raider for the maps, that´s sure)
Fist you´re right, and when you´re right, you are right. In a correct perspective horizon shouldn´t be visible at all or at least in a much higher position than in the image. My awkward excuse is that I went for a distorted perspective, more cartoon, trying to be a fisheye lense one, (obviously not achieved). The foreground buildings are on top of a hill, so it gives an optical illusion of floatingness too. Ok , I´m firing my lawyer right now. :D
Aearon
07-21-2003, 05:41 PM
No need for lawyers.. it's not all that confusing.. still looks great. :D
