I am working on a model of a large museum a need to create all textures in on file. The model is a low polygon model. I need some guidelines to how to approach it. This is the first time I am creating textures in this manner. Some tutorials will be a great help.

I would appreciate it if some can help!

I will be looking up reference materials from life. The textures will be created in Photoshop and applied in 3dsmax.

Ok firstly, why the need for all in a single file, You said low poly, so i am thinking is it for a game. If so, then plan and execute it as per your plans. Look around the gallery for enviorment models, Hmm there was a thread somewhere,, ok i need to look it up. Anyway, if texturing is totally, new to you then look up the tutorials and start working on it. If a single file, then it needs to be planned and properly UVed and optimised, so you might want to concerntrate on your UVs first.

Here is a site that has caught my attention, but i am no game artist, so i have not bought anything. But just for your information.

Post some pictures, tell us what software you are using, Max/Maya etc.

Good Luck,

A single (.tga) file is the requirement of the client I am doing this project for. I am thinking this is for games but not sure. The current poly count is 620 as the images indicate.

Key Points:

1) The model was built in Maya.
2) The UV mapping will be done in Max
3) Texture will be done in Photoshop.

I have been creating textures separately but I do not have experience in creating ALL textures for a model in a single file.

Any tutorials and guidelines will greatly help.

Ok i am a Maya guy, so i will just say, why not just continue in Maya, why the reason to go into Max, since you modelled in Maya.

Ok,, here is what you need to do.

Firstly all your seperate pieces, group them.

All your individual pieces you need to UV then, apply some projections and then work on your UVs. If you have problem, look at tutorials, One good one i know is over at

The second disc you will find Paul creates a house, something along what you have.

You can UV snapshot in the UV Texture Editor, bring into Photoshop and then Create your textures before reapplying it to your model group

Good Luck,
Kumar

CgKumar: I ended up modeling and uv mapping in maya, but the final output must be in 3ds max (.max format).

Thanks for your help and tips.

If the need is the max format, after everything is done then just export from maya into max and save out the file. I think FBX will be good, but then again you also can try obj. Either way formats are now becomming common.

Good Luck,

Kumar
