View Full Version : HMC #17 - Star Wars SteamPunk - Darth Vader
robo3687 10-01-2008, 03:49 AM http://img399.imageshack.us/img399/2554/headerum4.jpg
Idea: Initially I plan to just make Vader, but may move onto other things if I get him done quickly. My Vader will be quite rough and ragged, almost a post-battle type Vader (if you've seen towards the end of The Force Unleashed you'll know what I'm going for), with all 4 limbs being artificial (as is the case with Vader). I think the most fun will come from working out the limbs, having them be a combination of wood and metal and steam powered....should prove interesting....
My Vader also won't have a helmet, but I do plan on doing something to give a similar shape to the head area.
Concept Art
All I've got to show at the moment is this rough version of the head:

His scalp will be all burnt up and he won't have ears, so I'm going for the gruesome angle here....lol...the gas mask will probably be different to how it is here as well.
Reference
This is the level of crispiness I'm going for

UPDATE: Goggles - 1/10/09 16:20
Worked a bit on the goggles to get me started. They will have leather eye cups on the back of the goggles so it fits on the face better.

I'm trying to put as much real-world detail into this as I can, and have it look like it was actually made and not just some polys slapped together....

I've seen the Battle Damaged Vader in the Art of the Force Unleashed and it is a great image, your right he does look a bit crispy in parts.

DDS - Thanks mate
Will hpoefully have an update on his breathing apparatus tomorrow, it'll kinda be like a gas mask...but not....

Lookin' Good Robo! Ya know, something that might look really cool is, if from the side you see that his head is kind of caved in and augmented with transistors and other mechanical devices. It'd be gruesome though.

y'know...that would be awesome......vader has that big gash over the top of his head.....i think that would be the perfect spot for something like that.....he could have a steel plate or 2 as well....
One other idea I had is for his breathing unit...y'know the little black floating torture droid thing in the original Star Wars? I was thinking of doing something similar to that but with propellers and such and have that be like a portable air filtration unit or something....

looking good, man! you might wanna create a basic head to make sure it wraps around properly. Otherwise you might have to change it later on, which could be annoying.

yeh that's what I plan on doing next so I can shape the rest of the mask properly....i have a temporary head in there atm, but I'll make a new one...
one other bit I just noticed is the inside of the respirator, between the triangle and circle, that's supposed to be leather...so I think I might put some seams or something in there....its a bit hard to tell what it is atm...

UPDATE: 2/10/08 21:25
I did a rough head up so I could get the shaping right on this as suggested.....and i did have to change the shape of the goggles a little....
I'm happy with the leathery clone troopery look to the mask part of the respirator...it wasn't what i had originally planned but it just sort of appeared so I'm sticking with it....

next up is the buckles and such to fix the respirator to the face...

Oh wow, I hadn't seen that burnt Vader image before that's really awesome. The breather is looking fantastic.

Ahh! You're making us look bad! Slow down! j/k, great work. Is it going to be a bust, or full character?

at this stage it's going to be a full figure, but I may do some sort of environment or vehicle, I did have quite a good idea for a TIE fighter so we'll have to wait and see.

Wow! Looks allready very good by now. I think your concept is very promising too. I like the idea, that you show Vaders burned skull. It makes him even more scary in his Machine-Human appearance.
I´m looking foreward for this one. Bring it on!!

Confound it, I was making designs toward a TIE fighter! You'll steal my thunder!
All seriousness though, the mask is looking fantastic. I know a buddy of mine who's into steampunk-fashion and would probably give up his insurance to have something like that to wear to parties. You're showing off a rather annoying level of elegance, also-- I keep wanting to ask for wireframes of this or that part of the mask, and then at a second glance it all makes perfect sense. :)
Keep it up, man; you're off to a terrific start!

Locusta - thanks
chrisbeaver - thanks, I think that's one of the best compliments I've gotten from this site...lol...and you can still go ahead with your TIE fighter....because I may never even get to it...
more work will hopefully be done on this today

great progress so far
for a model like this i think detail is what it's all is gonna be about. But might i suggest you considering real bolts instead of rivets? I think these will make it just a little more steam punk and give it a little self build style.
cheers and good luck

oh what a pleasant surprise...i'd completely forgotten about mudbox 2009 coming out....and now I'm downloading the trial....so I'll be definitely using it in some capacity for part of this model...

was mucking around in Mudbox 2009 last night and came up with this...it's just a test...but it gives an idea of what I'm going for.....
http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/4854/011gx2.jpg
its handy when you can use yourself as reference for having a gash that big....not in the head of course but i had one about that size for about a year and a half....

moved on to working on the arms....I'm thinking of doing his left and right arms different like they were made at different times.....

Lookin' sweet. One question: is the outside of his head going to be composed of human skin, or some kind of rubbery material?
hey you've got some really nice details going on!
robo3687
10-12-2008, 02:22 AM
SantoAnderson - outside of the head will be skin...lovely burnt crispy and deformed skin.....lol
DDS - thanks
-----
hope to get a little more work done on the arms today....how i'm going to work through them will be this:
Robot Arm
- make some sort of steam compressor
- create a wooden base frame around it (basically the bones)
- work out the joints for the wrist
- add some techno junk and gears and stuff to fill out the arm
- come up with some cool looking brass cover to go over parts of the arm (so you can still see all the gizmos inside)
Other Arm
- this one won't actually be fully robotic, more a severely injured and mechanically assisted arm.
- it'll be similar to the arms on the Mk1 Iron Man suit, I watched stuff on the Iron Man Blu-ray last night and felt all inspired...lol....

Great work so far.
suggestion: his burns would make the mask pretty painful to wear. maybe he'd have some kind of home-brew medical solution. or some evidence of raw skin under the straps.
the goggles wouldnt fit conventionally either if he doesn't have much left in the way of ears.
keep it up mate, looking fwd to seeing the final result.

i loved that mk1 suit from iron man. I think it's a great inspiration piece. Main difference is that the suit is designed to hold a real hand and in this case it'll be not so. But basically it's the same thing almost. Just a little more compact.
Cheers en waiting to see more.
