Imagine you have been commissioned to model a character for a new STAR WARS video game called: STARWARS Steampunk.
So does this mean our models have to be game res? I realise that that's a pretty high polycount these days. I only ask because I was intending to go detail crazy with mine....
Unless I could class mine as the 'high poly for normal mapping' model....maybe?

Hello Roberto,
I have got two questions: First of all, do you think that one has to be very experienced in modeling to join a Hardcore Modeling Challenge? I am rather a beginner than a pro but would like to join anyway. Would that be OK?
And the second question: If I draw some scribbles while modeling (e.g. to design some details) where are they to be posted? In the CONCEPT ART & REFERENCE- or the WIP thread?

Anyone can participate.
We are here to have fun...And geek out a bit.

Please post them here:

I'm pretty sure my concept drawings will not be up to nearly the standard that Marcel has set but I'll post them anyway.
But here's my question, I've got an idea that doesn't neatly fall into the steampunk category. It's steampunk but not in the typical Victorian era. I'm drawing Luke Skywalker as a young steampunk samurai, katana lightsabre etc. I'm basing some of it from Katsushirō of Seven Samurai and Samurai 7 but anyway, what do you think?
I finally got a copy of The Hidden Fortress on DVD which had a cool interview with George Lucas on how it influenced him and I thought it would be a great crossover.

That sounds REALLY cool.
I would love to see it.

Hey Roberto great topic by the way, I have a question I was reading the rules for the challenge and it says we have to give credit to the artist for there concept art work. Do we have to ask for permission to use it first before we post it on our thread or is it ok to use and give them credit in our thread? Thanks for your time.

I would feel more comfortable if yo uask permission to the artist.
To be fair, most of the artists are dying to see their work moved into the 3d realm.
Drop me a line if you have any problems.

do i have to work from a concept? yes, but it can be your own rather than one already posted.
But i think you need to post your concept art (at least a basic sketch) up before you begin modelling.
I'm sure Roberto will correct me if im wrong ..:D

Hi Roberto - This wasn't clear in the rules thread - you may want to update it so people aren't starting their modeling without asking permission first - uhmmmm, like me :) I'm glad I read through this thread before I really got into it. This is a great challenge, so hopefully I'll be able to continue ....

hey robert. how much liberty can we take with the concept we choose? do we have to follow it exactly, or can it just be inspiration? if we do decide to stray from it, should we augment it with our own concepts?

You should use the concept as a starting point.
So yes you can use it as inspiration.

Can you clarify whether we need the concept artist permission or not? In the rules in only states that we need to credit the concept artist. Thanks!

Hey Roberto,
I was kind of confused by the rulez about posting your final work. I got my turntable and busy doing the Orthographic renders. And want to know now where exactly and what to post the final work.
And my turntable is a 600 x 480 px plus a detail at 780 x 480.
so if i get it right, it's a:
- perspective reder
- 3 orthographic renders
- turntable
would it do ?
cheers

For the turntable we ususally are happy with a perspective render...
Looking forward to your entry.

Well, I don't know, but shoudn't have this challenge ended on 17th november, 2008, 12:00pm (GMT)?
I thought the threads would be locked after that time.
Please Roberto, is the challenge still running or it's over? Are we still allowed to post?
Thank you guys

And where can I find this in the regulation? I just found this:
"NEW DATELINE! Monday, November 17th 12:00 PM" (by R. Ortiz)
Did I misunderstand the rules?

Ok fair enough.
You got a point, but even I wanted I cannot post the voting thread in the next 2 days.
It takes mea full day to set it up.
I am sorry this has dissapointed you, it could not be helped, but I do hope this does not discourage you from participating in future challenges.

Hi Roberto Ortiz,
First of all, I just want to explain I'm not blaming you. You did a excellent job and I'm totally satisfied and pleased to have participated in this awesome challenge. Certainly I'm going to participate again because it was a wonderful opportunity to practice and chat with another great cg artists.
I was just pointing that, in the next HMC, this is a point that should be improved to guarantee the competitors rights, valuing the ones that were able to manage their time to finish before the dead line.
Anyway, you did a great job and thank you for providing us this incomparable opportunity,

I was just wondering who is eligible to vote? I participated in the challenge, but, did not finish. Can I still cast a vote when it is time?
P.S.
This was a great challenge! Thanks for the opportunity!

Its nothing you can really plan for Hugo. At the end there is always a period where Roberto is setting everything up. During that period he usually allows people to continue posting. Those that post on time are allowed to continually update their previous entry as they improve or make changes. The last challenge had tons of entries and it took much longer than usual to set up the vote. During that time, Roberto allowed changes or late entries. Anyway, planning for it is not a good idea because its different every time.

Edit: Never mind I see you are changing it right now.
I am a little confused with the voting system. There are only 6 entries up for voting, so do we vote for those 6 and then do another round of 6.
Thanks
-Eric
