CGTalk - Need Help Please!!

Hello, I need some advice on attaching some nurbs surfaces. I'll use the image below as an example. I spaced them apart so you can see the detachment a little better.

I need to attach both nurbs surfaces together but I only want them connected as far as the smaller surface spans out to (The Red Line). When They connect I just want it to have it remain the same shape. I've tried attaching surfaces in many different ways but it still distorts the overall shape. I don't care if the UV spans change but the shape is critical.

actually it's not possible by just attaching but you can either trim it
or if it actually is rectangular and you don't want to trim make a degree-1 nurbs surfache and move

for trimming: first intersect the surface with another surface or project a curve then trim it
