Hi, my name is Benjamin Leitgeb, aka Selwy and I have just finished my Digital Sculpting Reel 2008. It took me quite a while to get the content together and it doesn’t turn out as good as I initially planned it, but anyway... Feel free to visit www.selwy.com (http://www.selwy.com/) for more information (sketches, concept drawings, Zbrush screenshots…). There you will find also a Zbrush sculpt of mine that I will give away for free. So if someone is interested and a Zbrush User, check the “free model” article in the articles section on my website. All models were build in ZBrush and rendered with Vray in 3ds Max. I'm currently seeking employment as modeler in either film or games. That’s all.

Thanks and all the best, Selwy

you should throw in some wireframe shots, since your models need to be animatable in the end...or so i've heard. :D eitherway those are some impressive sculpts.

hey benjamin!

i think the individual models looks great (-especially the last one), but seeing them together, they almost looks too similare.
i like the overall mass and form of your characters, but i think you've gone overboard at some points.
the first guy, got a little too much wrinkles and fat at the stomach. compared to his arms and legs.
at the last one, i think it's mostly the elbows.
these things are ofcause just personal prefs.

ohh! yeah! i'll agree with ragdoll about the wires.

Yeah some wires would've been nice, but the anatomy is fantastic. You've got a cool style too.

Awesome reel man.

This is a IMPRESIVE SCULTURE, but for a reel seems to me that need others things:

1- Wireframe

2- Base Mesh

3- More rhythm, is too bored. I know that the point is show the models but IMO must be more movement, perhaps the same model in diferent poses, perhaps instead of climbing the camera for a still image, do a tild up with the camera so we see this as the model on the basis of the perspective.

4-Perhaps a little bit shorter.

Anyway as this shows very well your talents sculptors, you can only sell so much better.

Congratulations

Definatley some cool models.

One critique is you might want to add a little animation to the characters so you can see how well they deform. Even an idle breathing anim would help spice up your turntables.

I agree. Really good work.

On the other side:

-Your choice of music doesn't help to keep interest.
-A little bit repetitive. The two nude males are portraying the same things, therefore maybe loose one of the nude shots.
-maybe add some wired and low res cages to see how the normal maps did the change.
-maybe texture one completely.
-maybe changes in the lighting or tempo. I don't know specifically what but something to change the timing of your reel and make it look more interesting.
-Watch out for the flickering on the eyes of the first character.

Best of luck and hope this helps.

Hi, thank you very much for critics and comments!

ragdoll – Thank you! And you’re right. The wireframe shots are missing. I wish I had more time to build them in and foremost to retopologizing the models better. I hope I can do that next time.

rasmusW – Thank you! You’re right, too. I have gone over the top at some points. When you work in ZBrush it’s hard to stop detailing : ) I have still problems to build the anatomy accurate. It seems that I have to go back to the drawing table and my anatomy books for a while.

PaulAdams – Thank you!

MVDB – Thank you! I’m just visiting your portfolio. Of course I already know your work, it’s very impressive!

atd – Thank you very much for your comment and the critic on the reel. I have just watches yours (amazing amount and quality of work, by the way) and I must say that my reel is maybe really a little bit boring. If I would have time to rework it I would definitely make it only 2 minutes long, change the camera movements and make it more entertaining (not just turntables over and over again).

Tad Ghostal – Thank you, the idea with the breathing animation is great! I will try that when I publish my next work

David-J – Thank you! Already a few people said that the music is boring. I thought it works well with the quite slow rhythm and camera moves. Sadly I haven’t the time to texture one of the models. The idea of showing how the low res cages are changing through the normal and displacement map is great! I will show that on my next project, too.

StephaneD – Thank you

It'd be a waste of his talent to force him to mess around with the technical stuff.
Just hire an extra edgehead (like me) to do the retopology work and keep him sculpting...

the chromatic aberration isnt really something i would recomend on a modeling real...
Makes it really hard on the eyes (annoying) to judge your modeling skills.
I would ditch the dof also, as it blurs out parts of the model ppl may want to check ;)

Wow I was really blown away man . Your work is proof that with practice , creating something with the high quality of a traditional sculpt is very possible (people usually say there is a big gap between the two ,digital and traditional) . Amazing stuff buddy! Cant wait to see more from you :)
Cheers,
D

azazel – Thank you very much! I will upload it on vimeo

Aben-Athar – Thank you!

CHRiTTeR – Thank you for your critic. You’re right about the chromatic aberration and the DOF. Maybe I’ve gone over the top.

MayaDamien – Thank you! I have just visited you portfolio and I’m really impressed by the quality of your models. The face expression is priceless.

Tremendous modelling skills displayed here. Whats the name of the song you used? It reminds of bladerunner, but im not quite sure if thats where its from.

Hi rustbucket
Thank you very much for your comment. It's "Blade Runner Blues" from the bladerunner soundtrack. Absolute great music if you ask me. I remember "the experiment". What a great project!!
