Software maker Corel on Friday said its directors have agreed to a takeover bid from San Francisco-based Vector Capital that values the company at $97.6 million, or $1.05 per share.

Probably won't affect anyone, but it's good to know if you use Painter or any other Corel products.

Hmmmm... Despite the continued popularity of painter (I've no idea how its other programs fare), I wonder what would make Corel an attractive company to buy-out.

And who/what the hell is "Vector Capital" anyway?

It looks like a venture capital company. Buy now when the company is worth little, then make a quick buck in 12-18 months selling it, or portions of the company off.

Well Corel has a bunch of other issues. Now the "Professional" suite of the WordPerfect Office 11 suite is on a License Program and there is no upgrade for users of the 2002 Professional suite.

That's bad business.

Well they did one smart thing recently, and that's to drop the price on just about all their non-flagship products: http://www.corel.com/creativesummer

Bryce is down to $79, Knockout is $99

They also finally put their Flash program as a standalone instead of just including it with the whole Draw package. At $40 it's alot more attractive than the $499 pricetag of Flash MX and $399 for Livemotion (though I'm sure it does only a smidgen of what they do)

I swear Painter is the bastard child of the art industry. This is at least the 3rd or 4th company to inherit Painter. I wish Adobe would just buy the damn thing and incorporate it's natural media into Photoshop already.

At $79, I'd get myself a copy of bryce, for old times sake, but I'm dissapointed that they only are making it for windows now.

I don't care what happens--as long as Painter stays in development, and whoever continues developing it doesn't screw it up.

Adobe buying Painter would basically mean a monopoly in the 2D app arena. Not healthy at all.

I kind of agree with Shade01... Adobe should just buy painter, merge it into Photoshop and get it over with.

I loooove painter. There is no other program that can do what it does so well. The fact that it's been gone from Fractal Designs to Meta Creations to Corel to Vector is not good. You kind hope Painter will always continue to be worked on and not suffer but being sold to a venture capital company and NOT an art company is not a good sign for the future (positive) development of Painter. It will probably be sold again to god knows who in another year or two. At least if Adobe bought painter you can be guaranteed that it would have a future in some form, either as a continued seperate package or integrated into Photoshop, and more R&D dollars than in recent years. Besides, Painter and Photoshop match each others weaknesses perfectly.

if adobe did buy painter, i would hope they kept it as a separate package then photoshop, but improve painters layer mask system

Guys. Painter is still owned by Corel. Vector is an investment firm.
