"Epic Games, the developers of Unreal Tournament 2003, and nVidia have announced a huge UT2K3 modification contest called 'Make Something Unreal' (http://www.makesomethingunreal.com/). This competition will reward the truly great modders out there, and will hopefully encourage more people to mod for UT2K3." Word is that "..entries can be made in 13 categories, including 'Best Mod,' 'Best Character,' 'Best Use of 3D Sound,' 'Best Real-Time Non-Interactive Movie (also known as Machinima),' and more", and prizes include over $1,000,000 in total, with first prize $50,000 and a $350,000-value commercial Unreal Engine license."

Now I'm stoked about all the good gaming that will come of this. I can't wait to play, and hopefully rate some of the entries. :bounce:

Attention jobless youths! This is your chance!

Most people I know that have been a part of game mod projects are still in High School, and this would really be a good chance for them to get a quick $10,000. It's hard for people swinging full time work + school to handle a big project like this, and you just know that if it's an officially sanctioned contest by Atari that a lot of people will enter and you HAVE to bring your "A Game" to this.

So good luck to those who have the time. I'd love to help out any team with my texture services if any team forms here at CGTalk... I just can't devote a lot of time to it unfortunately. :(

Hey... Hope this is ok to post this here. Just so happens that the day the contest is announced, I secure my first coder! Fate I tells ya.

Anyways, I could still do with some help with Character Modelling/Animations/Skinning, Weapon Modelling, Texture Artists, Sound Engineers... basically I'll pretty much look at anything anyone can provide, except Level Designers. I've plenty of those. Another coder with Uscript experience would be nice too.

The mod is a tactical fps set in the future. Emphasis is on team play and tactics, less on running and gunning. Fans of Americas Army, Raven Shield, or the UT mod Infiltration should like what we hope to produce.

Email me at seeker@combatmaps.com if you're interested in helping out. Send me a link to a site that has youre content posted. Don't send me attachments. I'm also only interested in mature individuals who take this seriously. I don't mind taking in younger talent, but I don't want to babysit. This is a free mod, there is no money for you involved. Just experience.

Thanks guys and gals.

Perhaps we could open up a sub-forum in the collaborative projects for it!!

Good luck to all who enter!

good timing for me since i have an UT2003 level on the way out. [also have a good idea for a none-FPS mod...]

this is good for Epic and Atari to get this going before the king of mods [Half Life 2] comes out. this way, they can get the modder's in Unreal and have them hopefully forget about HL2. plus w/ UT2004 on it's way out!

***i responded to another UT2003/4 post and it got erased, can the mods maybe MERGE similar threads instead of just throwing them away???***

Hmm the only thing I could go for in this is the 'best model' category since I dont know anything about making mods and such. It says:

Best Character Model
Can you make an awesome original character model for UT2003/UT2004? Feel free to call on the game's existing skeletal meshes and animation, or go for extra consideration and create your own!

Does this have to be a useable low res model? or can we just create a character normally using all tools and types. Also, I dont know where to post this question! Its early yet, but hey the early bird gets the worm right? hehe

wow....

now if only I could run the UT editor... (mumbles something about 1280 by 1024 resolution) stupid NEC.. wont update there drivers....

maybe a charector :)

Tom N. - I would assume the model has to be usable, so make it 2500-3500 polys with two 512 maps.

This is one hell of a way to promote UT :) very nice. I predict a huge boom in resources for UT: good for the UT community, Good for Epic and nVidea, great competitive experience for those that enter and really good for the price winners :)

This is a quote from Lee Perry of Epic:

"I noticed on your summary you suggested a 512x512 default skin size. I just wanted to point out that this can be significantly higher. I personally wouldn't bother doing a skin less than 1024x1024 unless you just feel uncomfortable working that large. The UT2k3 skins are actually 2 1024x1024 textures. One body, and one for the head.

2 very important things to keep in mind here though are that using textures at that size require selecting "DXT1" compression when importing a TGA into the texture browser. Here's the rub... DXT1 does not allow for an alpha channel, therefore you would have to be very clever indeed about applying shaders to such a character. If you have an alpha channel in a skin, it should come in at DXT5 compression, which is obviously much larger, and I would definitely NOT reccomend bringing in a bunch of 1024x1024s at DXT5. One is debatable.

Also, the way the engine handles state changes, it's better to have one larger texture than several smaller ones. Don't pile 3 256x256 textures on a model, it would be much more efficient to just do a single 1024 and get some bonus resolution."

So that's the deal on textures... another quote from him, in reference to creating a player model:

"I wouldn't bother working below 3000 polys or below a 1024x1024 texture, assuming I wasn't doing something funky that required an alpha channel."

I'm pretty sure player models in UT can be up to 10000 polys without any significant hit. From what I understand, you can do a low res version (3000ish) and a hires version and the game will use which ever one depending on the ingame detail settings. Don't quote me on this though, I'm still looking to confirm.

would be nice to get someone of the runners to answer those Qs....

EDIT: btw...lemme add some dumb-ass Qs of mine (never done anything for a game) ....what files do they need (if they want them and not just a render of it) to have it run on their engine *.obj?... what's it about with those 'unreal integrated predefined sketletal structurs or something like that'?

schmu_20mol the only dumb questions are the ones not asked. for making levels, you would export [atleast from max] as .ASE files and the textures would be compressed threw photoshop as .DDS [the free plugin can be found at Nvidia's web page]. i think lightwave people can simple save in lightwave format and UnrealED will accept that. maya does the same as max. as for characters, i think it's the same thing, but don't quote me, i haven't tried characters yet, just levels.

have good mod'ing!

i think so [haven't tried maya-->ut2003] but that may be just for level pieces, not characters models.

Daniel, you can submit anything. goto...

http://www.ut2003.com/?contest_categories

they have TONS of choices [best mutator, level, model, voice pack...] and you can win in more then 1 catagory and you can win in any phase. so if you map isn't ready, just wait till phase 2 to enter.

Hey this looks fun, I have another game project sorta on the burner but this could be a reasonable small side project. Only problem is that I lack a coder for either project... anyone know any resonably good C++ coders?? I'm serious...

anyways yeah I got an idea for a non FPS mod :p  :airguitar

So make a model! Go for it! All categories are worth getting into. Lots of them offer $3000 computers too. Also, you can't get a mod done by February? That's a ways off. I'm sure you could pull that off, right?
