View Full Version : Micro-World
iadagraca 09-26-2008, 04:43 PM Hello everyone!
its been several months since my last project cause i lost the pen to my tablet...i haven't been able to get one yet...and i still don't have it...but i do have a tablet pc now courtesy of my dad :D.
so anyway i have photoshop on it, and started on a few projects, and this is my main one that a drew several months ago(maybe more). i came up with it during school in biology, there were some pictures of microscopic animals and cells and stuff. i knew the colors were altered but i still liked the look, so i started soming up with ideas and got this!

i'm almost done with shading and almost ready to move on to the other details... i haven't done much painting in photoshop so technically this is my first...if i finish it :P...which i hope to do...

Hi theblackmage,
I am glad you have got a new tablet :)
I stumbled in drunk a few weeks ago and knocked my tablet pen on the floor, my heart skipped a beat for a few seconds and it did soba me up some.... couldnt live without it!
Ok, on to your work -
Please do this for me, pick a family member or a close friend and show them the piece in it's current state - ask them what they think your works "theme" is and you are not allowed to tell them.
I don't get this piece at all, sorry. And I feel that not many people will (as in 0).
If this is meant to be abstract art then it's still not very consistent, the lines, the strokes, the colours are all......confusing and not pleasant on the eye.
If you are gonna do abstract art may I suggest you just go straight into 3d creations, rendering complexed shapes will be 1000x easier and it will look very nice I am sure.
Sorry if this is a put off.
Cheers,

What surprises me the most, is that you managed to draw out a rough grid of thirds, and still missed any approximation of the intersect points with your main shape, although two minor shapes hit the mark...
The flow is okay, but pointless. You have no clear focal point, you have no clear flow, you have no unity to this piece.
It is a very nice doodle of wavy organic lines. If you shade it decently, you may have a passable image of swirly shapes. But in the end, it will still be just a doodle, regardless the inspiration from microscopic images...
BTW, the large light shape on the RH side looks like a gigantic men's urinal...

ok i understand, i guess its hard to tell now, the colors were supposed to help. but anyway, my intention with this drawing is to do a less literal version of some sorta microscopic city :P. like in the drawings you see small circles and a few undefined shapes along what looks sorta like a road, are supposed to be microscopic animals...like cars on a highway. the other objects are exactly like the pictures i looked at, accept allot less detail... the two largest objects(not the loop) had ridges and squares on them like a weird building. but i haven't added the details of everything yet.
i guess its hard to get the theme probably because i haven't added any details...it just looks like shapes...
but i'l try what you said...and i'll update when things are a bit more defined...cause everything is far simpler than i imagine the result will be...maybe i should improve the drawing and wait for me to continue in photoshop...

Since you are going to start over, save yourself a LOT of time and wasted energy, and make some Compositional Roughs BEFORE starting a full-sized image.
They don't have to be big, they don't have to be detailed.
Make 3 -5 little, simple sketches with general shape and value layout.
This will help you see where your focal point(s) will be, and help you decide how you want to use values to help with emphasis and flow.
Use Lines to make Shapes to Flow around your Focal Point, with a Balance of Space, Emphasized by Color and visual Texture...
The capitalized words are Compositional and Design concepts to think about...

yeah, thats what my 2d art composition teacher always had the class do last year in my freshmen year :P. i never really made a habit of it even though it helped a lot XD. but i'll remember that.
