View Full Version : How to make this glass better...?

I have already read the Brazil thread...

And I made some good looking glass materials before but this one just isn't convincing somehow.

Anybody got an idea how to make this bottle look better?

Put a BhodiNut "fresnel" shader in both the transparency and reflection channels, and put up something for the glass to reflect, like a white reflection card or a "hot box." Glass doesn't start to look sweet until it's reflecting its environment.

I already got a Fresnel in both and I know some tricks to make it look better but first I like to get the right kind of material.

Like the bottom, you can see the same things that so many CG glasses have. Instead of getting darker where the glass gets thicker, it actually gets lighter. There must be a trick to fix that kind of stuff.

Thanks for your suggestions though, but what is this 'Hot box'...?

Sounds interesting. :)

A hot box is used in photography. It's a big white panel that the flash sits behind, and you wind up having nice big rectangular reflections on your objects. You can simulate this really easily in cinema by using a plane with the luminance cranked up.

mdme_sadie posted a glass material some time ago, i don't remember where... It looked really cool and it used that white plane technique. It also used a different front and back material trick...

Here's a pic:

I kept the file to learn how this is made, but i confess i didn't get it 100%...
Maybe mdme_sadie could explain it in detail...

Is it asking too much?
