View Full Version : Concept Car: Delfino
Peoples 06-06-2003, 08:20 PM Having almost completed the Audi S3 (some minor tweaks still left & final renders) - I decided to keep modeling with all the new skills the Audi taught me, and started a new project. I had been looking for a cool car to model, something unusual. So - I found some prints of a car that I don't have a name for, the prints suggest it might be a Delfino Feroce concept, but I found some pics of a real Feroce which were totally different. But I think this car rocks and this is what I have got so far:

http://www.hut.fi/u/vhautala/renders/delfino/prints.gif
The prints aren't very accurate at all - so some creative thinking has to be practised...
My Audi didn't get that much attention  - but I'd like to hear some thoughts on this one

Tack för the comments! I'm definitely going to finish this one - I love the original concept - who ever is behind it has some serious skills on drawing cars..
Some cages and a minor update on the rear:

Are you guys tired of cars or tired of me? :wavey:  I'm in desperate need of attention here! LOL :bounce: :bounce:
The rear is a real pain in the ass - can't figure it out...The lights are placebos, added the roof and the opening in the hood:

really nice and clean model!! damn i wanna call that car mine, looks llike it has a lot of hp. :D
but i gotta say that i don't like the carpaint shader in the last pics.
i think it is because of the strange reflections on it. just try a few planes with luminosity turned on to reflect on the car instead of the pic. and maybe change the background to some sort of grey or white. if you have that ugly edge where the floor meets the sky obj just blur it heavily with dof.

I agree that the reflections look weird - I've been trying to find some decent hdri's but so far w/o success.. So here we go again w/ some more shots from my "car studio" - threw in some hotboxes for reflections and worked on the car shader a bit more. The model needs still a lot of work especially in the rear section - that's why there aren't any shots of it (cause it looks like crap - heh:scream: ) I can't figure out which color this beast should be - since I'm going to name it Delfino, the grey/silver might suit it pretty well but supercars usually tend to have a more noticeable color schemes....
No radiosity here - some 6 lights w/o speculars and w/ soft shadows.

cool car
however the thing (no idea what it's name might be, but i guess it has something to do with air and cooling the engine) on front of the windscreen looks too big/bulky compared with the sketch.
and if you have a look at the front sketch you'll see that this thing ends in a nice curve and not a straight line on the windscreen.
cheers

I think I'll lower the airvent a bit and might try how it looks if it continues to the end of the hood like it does in the sketch - just seemed better this way IMO -

suggestions? Anyone ?

i have been trying to make a car for a long time in C4D and have not been doing to good. Know any tuts or something I could try to use to set a base or just make a simple box with wheels?

There is lots of useful info on carmodelling w/ cinema here at the C4D forum - just run a search. But this is how I do it:
1. Find some good blueprints.
2. Slice them up in photoshop and make new materials w/ the sliced blueprints in the color channel.
3. Make planes for the prints (front, side, top etc)
4. I start usually w/ the hood. Make a new polygon object and put it in a symmetry object. Put the symmetry object in a Hyper Nurbs. Start adding points. I do this w/ topview activated and follow the lines of the prints on the hood. Copy paste the point rows and bridge the points together to get polygons.
5. Switch to all views and start adjusting the rows of points according to the prints sideprofile and frontprofile to get the hood's curvature right.
6. Once you have the basic shape correct - for sharper edges use hypernurbs weighting if you have R8 or just copy paste the edge row of points, move it very little outwards, and bridge. This way you'll be adding geometry and will get a sharper edge.
7. For the next piece - split the edge row of points on the hood for a separate object and continue again w/ copy-pasteing points and bridging. This way your pieces will match correctly w/ nice seams (w/ some adjusting)
8. If more thicknesss is needed for the pieces - run the MakeThicker plugin.
This is just the way I usually work - there are many other (better) ways. All the info here is studied right here at the forum - run a search on cars and you'll find many threads w/ lots of info. I couldn't model a decen't car (still can't) but this is what I have learned from here.
One more advice: Don't give up, If something doesn't look good, don't be afraid to start over - thats how you'll learn and get better!

little OT
how to post many images in the some msg as u did?
Peoples

If you have some webspace to put host your images - just use the IMG button in the message interface
I was thinking maybe making this car a champagne color. I have to come up w/ an idea for how the rear lights could look like - maybe I'll put them inside the panel, kinda like in the front. I was also thinkin about making some chrome lists surrounding the sidewindows. That might make it look more classy - and maybe some three chrome stripes on the door as well, that migth add some to its a fast 'n furious look.
C&C? Anyone? Please?   :surprised

You say your bad at cars when does the maddness end? Ok car colour is just right I think if you made the air vent shutters? on the side sweep with the car more (instead of just sticking out of the side) it would make it look very fast and even cooler. Lastly for a rear lights I think if u move the panel they are on in a bit then cover it, it would look pretty cool maybe have a razed bit in the middle.

the car is a little short for my tates, but i am partial to the viper or hennessey venom, and they are long (well practiacally the same) i like cars to have long front ends...like the cadillac 16...it shows that they have large engines > more displacement > more go.
This car looks like it could have a Inline 4...or possibly a boxer engine...but i think its a little much to squeeze a 6 into that...thats just my opinion though...but i do like it, very prototypish, and that color is teh ROCK!
damn nice dude cleanest model I have seen in a while.
ohh yeah mars arts he didn't attach multiple images, he hosted from another website and pressed the the img button.

Man that car is mean and slick looking, the color and lighting is great! It looks like a mix between a porche and a 350z, with some weird twist goin on *but a good twist  * . Cant wait to see whats next

rear looks pretty cool, too! :D for contrast issues you might let the rear lights as they are. as for the chrome surroundings, cool idea btw. :), make a surrounding arround each part of the rearlight, and just on on the bottom line of the side windows, that would make it look more slick that surrounding the hole window. there's one crit though, the last pic looks a bit like a celrender, did you use some fresnel in the reflections channel of the shader? maybe you have to add a lumas in the luminosity channel to get that more deep carpaint look.

Thanks guys - it's nice to get some comments on this thread finally:wip:
I'm currently trying out different rearlights - here's one try. I have fresnel in the refl. channel but the carpaint is still under construction as well. I made the crome surrounding for the side window too and some stripes and some rubber things for the side. I think I'm getting a hang of how to model cars nowadays - thought I'd go for the interior as well (at least something simple).
Keep the comments coming - they are always a great source of inspiration and energy to keep going:wavey:

hmmm its very parallel now on the doors. I personally think its too cluttered around there. Oh yea what about door handles? I like this rear, its just sleek and not bulky. I like the most recent rim material also
Lookin good mate, keep em rolling!

(If you are going for the more realistic apporach)
.. Add some door handles, a muffler, and maybe a small wing on the back ;D

I've been busy w/ moving to a new apartment - but I'm still very eager to finish this car. The door handles will be at the end of the door panel, just before the seam so they point kind of upwards parallel to te seam. Hard to explain but you'll see :p
I'm still tweaking the rear lights and there will be mufflers of course. I know it's still a WIP but I made a 10sec animation 360° around the car. If someone's interested I can put it up for you...:wavey:

Hey! What's up guys? Long time since my last visit - been busy w/ moving to a new flat together w/ my girlfriend and I've also been roadracing the tracks w/ my new kawasaki :scream: My mac also crashed and I couldn't recover almost any of my cinema stuff - but the delfino survived
So - It's still not finished, I just should stick to the details instead of the paint tweaking but here's yet another one for you:

Funky design and very well modeled.
needs some of the small details to make it really realistic.
I'd hate to see this thing coming up behind me in the rear-view mirror. Looks like it'll eat small cars

Oink-Vrouuum! Me want one - desperately - now!!!
A design with potential - although not very trendy, so it will be difficult to find funding ;-)
BTW, at the car door, you have two strips. It might be a good idea to remove them and use a bumped strip for the complete part.
Cheers,

I dunno I'd get one I think it's pretty fine.
Peoples I think the modeling is great but the textures for the body and glass are too reflective and look a little plasticy, needs some more tweaking before they really bring out the beauty of the model. Also the grill on the right hand side seems to be peeling away from the body. All in all it's good make it great:buttrock:

This composite is made with my own HDRi from that same place - and composite done w/ tips from Holle on "faking floors". AA sucks and the model lacks some details but I think the composite worked pretty well...
