View Full Version : Frat. - A french student short film
Larsen 09-25-2008, 08:09 PM Hi everyone,
We just finished our short film Frat. and would like to show it to the cg society.
http://www.frat-film.com/frat_cgsociety.jpg
The movie is directed by Sebastien Durand (me), Aurélien Peis, Julien Limon and Cédric Trezeguet at ESMA in Montpellier (France), the pre-production took approx. 7 months (not at full time) and we spent 10 months on the production (full time and more :) ).
Synopsis :
In a world where stone slowly overruns people and transforms them into statues, Sai, a twelve years old little boy, has the power to cure this disease with his blood. Since he is a child, his older brother, Vlad, martyrs him and preys on his gift by hiting him. One day Vlad lends Sai to his thug friends, who profit to cure their wounds and hit him, letting Sai sink into unconsciousness. In his dream, Sai discovers that he also has inside him, deeply buried, stone…
We of course took a risk by telling this kind of story in this universe, but that's what we always wanted from the beginning. We always maintained the decision to do something very different than what see in 3D nowadays, by using the advantages of CG and telling a story that put back us directly on our seat, to think about the complexity and horrors of human beings.

Ah. Very artistic indeed. I liked it. Even though I didn't understand the point of it.
But the visual look of it, however, was great. I really, really liked it, and I bet alot of hard work is behind that. So grats to you guys for an outstanding piece of work!!
5 stars!

Wow! amazing work man. I thought the texturing and the concept for the film were really top notch, very original indeed. There were some really nice moments through out the film, I was thoroughly impressed. If I had to critique something I would say the character animation throughout was a bit rigid and not as expressive as it could have been. Also the pacing was a bit slow for a such a short film, but I know how hard it is to do this stuff and what you have done is amazing. Congrats to you and the rest of the team!
Cheers

Nice animation:) I like that.
you must work more on character weight. People weight is not so bad but dog weight is too week and his balances is too not enough. But fingers animation is very nice:)

The entire setup with the rock that becomes a mouse had me amazed. Wonderfull storytelling, heck I completely forgot about the rock, seeing the mouse come out had caught me completely off guard. Genuinely felt like watching a magician.

Thanks a lot guys, Your comments are really appreciated !
About animation, we absolutely know that sometimes it's weak and sometimes better, that is a matter of many factors, the time spending because of some rushes in the production and the period in the year when we made animation, 8 mn of animation is such a lot of work, we were principally 2 animators, Aurélien and me, i made almost 25 % of animation and he did the rest during 3 months. It is clear that at the end of the year, we were a lot more comfortable with characters than in the beginning...

without reading the synopsis, my interpretation of the film was that violence and destruction slowly turns you into stone...the dog got into a fight at the start of the film, so one of his legs turned to stone, the gang that was beating up someone had body parts turn to stone...the boy who was kind clearly had immunity to all this, but the ending where he steps on the picture and turns himself into stone seemed kind of off balanced(?) it wasn't too destructive or violent to fully turn him into stone, i was thinking that maybe he'd kill his brother and then as a result would turn him into stone...which would've given it a much stronger impact(?) maybe...just my thoughts. :)
...
after reading the synopsis i guess violence and destruction had no connection with the stone infection...but oh well...i enjoyed the film to the end. good job anyway!

Exactly. Violence (physical or psychological) turns people into stone. We can say that bad people turns themselves into stones...
it wasn't too destructive or violent to fully turn him into stone, i was thinking that maybe he'd kill his brother and then as a result would turn him into stone...which would've given it a much stronger impact(?) maybe...just my thoughts. :)
That could have been a different perspective of the film, but not with the same little boy character imo. We made the little boy to be very pure, a kind of little angel, so pure that he even has to be forgiven to quit his brother... Maybe you misunderstood it, but after the "rape" part, in his dream, Sai discover that he has stone in himself, but he would not use it as you would imagine, he's kind of violent in his words and thought at this precise moment, he decides to quit his brother and maybe let him die, that's a decision he would never take or even think about before... So all is about Sai's personnality, this little boy can't be physically violent, he's here to make the balance between darkness and lightness, violence and love...
I hope it answer your interrogation and doubt, thanks.

I saw the stone thing as being a metaphor for hatred. Some peoples hearts are filled with hate, though they may still warm to the innocence of a child.
Yet if a child is exposed to violent abuse, maybe part of their mental/social development shuts down, and they flip out later in life. Something like that??

That's a possible interpretation riki, the short is pretty open about that, we made symbols and metaphore like the stone, the blood in order that people make their own interpretations, there's one storyline in the film, but if you look closer it can take many senses at differents scales of human existence.

Thanks a lot guys for your critics and comments. I am Aurélien, one of the directors of this movie, and I am very happy to have feedbacks. As Sébastien said, we wanted something new and original, and I hope the risks we took please you.
I am glad that some things are felt but not totally understood, that let the spectator free in front of our movie. For example, I like the comment from Riki that sees stone as hatred, that is exactly it, and in the same time, sees deeper than what the movie says. In fact, we don't answer the question of what would become a child exposed to this violence in the future. We just tell the story of our character that sacrifices himself for his brothers's good. So, your interpretation (riki) can fit too if you transposed our story to different levels, universes, characters, or stories, but in this case it's not the fact with this character (Sai).
But don't take it bad, I think it is great that people see further than what is narratively told, because that is exactly what we were looking for, create a story that allows different levels of understanding.

Hey guys, sorry for the quality of the audio mix. We just had a bad surprise receiving this DVD 1024 version, and unfortunately, we can't change it because this is a sound studio that took care of it.
We are really angry against them, because they ruined a lot of cinematographic effects (besides all the technical faults).
Sorry about that, hoping you'll still enjoy the movie.
