View Full Version : Laying stuff out on a complex surface

Hi all

I just uploaded a little maxscript called SlideKnit to our tools page at http://slidelondon.com/iv. It's similar to MLdecorate (http://www.monkeylab.com.au/rd/Plugin_MonkeyDecorate/MonkeyDecorate_Documentation.htm) but works in newer 3dsmax versions, and is useful for doing the kind of thing seen here (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=5395022&postcount=56) (that's not our work, unfortunately!).

Basically, it takes a UV mapped mesh as input and creates a new object in the shape of these UVs - with a morph modifier to bring the verts back to their correct world positions.

It's great for laying out stuff along complex surfaces (straps and stuff to character torsos, for example). You can easily lay your stuff out on top of the (planar) flattened mesh, skin wrap it all to this and then when you morph the flattened mesh back into place all your stuff will come with it.

Hope it's useful!

Hello Visionmaster - loving all your work, by the way!

Very briefly :

1. Make the mesh mesh you want to wrap stuff around, and give it a decent continuous UV layout
2. Run SlideKnit on it - you'll see a mesh in the shape of the UVs
3. Layout a new 'stuff' object over the UV mesh
4. Add a Skin Wrap modifier to your stuff object, and add the UV object as a deformer. You may need to play with the setting to the weightings looking good
5. Select the UV mesh and drag the channel 1 spinner up to 100%
6. Done!

its what i was looking for ! :applause:
