Title: Kamaji's new office
Name: Kristian Larsen
Country: Norway
Software: Maya, mental ray, Photoshop

My September entry for TheGnomonWorkshop's monthly image challenge, the topic being 'boiler room'.. Imediately I thought of Myazaki's 'Spirited Away', with the lovely characters of six-armed Kamaji and his enchanted soot Susuwatari, and wanted to make a tribute to this film. First I thought of copying a scene or still from the movie, but decided later to give Kamaji a brand new room with more space for him to move around in... a birthday present from his witch employee, Yu- Baaba:D

Wanted to pay more attention to composition and color.

Modelled and rendered in Maya/Mental Ray and post in CS3.
Any c&c are most welcome...

Thx for comments, special thx Lman, your comment made me happy :) (I peeked the forum yesterday, maybe I'm in if I find time, as you say, could be useful). Although I didn't aim on realistic lighting in favour of a more graphic feel, but still, if it messes up the img and confuse the viewer I have to keep that in mind (not to say that I know lighting at all);) Cheers!

I thought you were going for a illustration-style render and am impressed overall with the image. The only thing you didn't achieve (yet) is real tension -- if you intended to do so that is. My eyes traveled from the (antagonist?) face to the tea pot up to the clock, down some stairs and into a mysterious hallway. That's quite a long trip but I was still a little nonplused what was going on. Doing this subject with an NPR intent is quite a challenge though so great job!

Thanks, djacobs! You seem to understand what I was aiming for, and I really tried to make the different components of the scene to cling and thus help the viewers eyes in exploring the image, more with the help of abstract effects than the more obvoius. And I agree on your comments, maybe I got too carried away with details, and forgot the centre of action, which maybe gave the image an overemphasis on the abstract and a loss of focus (since it really is a scene:)
