Hi all

I keep having problems converting Editable Poly To Editable Mesh back to Editable Poly Again and thats when the Mesh goes crazy. Theres new Edges all over the Place and The faces "peel" off when you move them.

I have to change to Edit Mesh from Poly mode to weld a Few vertices together that wont weld in Poly Mode. When I finsh my work under Editable Mesh Mode, I change back to Poly and thats when everything stuff up.

Why and how do i Fix this problem?

thanks

i'd say fix it by keeping your objects Epolys. If some vertices won't weld, there must be a reason and it's not because of the kind of object it is.

It somehow is logical that your mesh would go crazy from so much conversion, for instance Emesh does not support quad faces while Epoly does not display hidden tris in quads - when you say that edges appear all over the place i guess it comes from converting to Mesh -> displays all previously hidden edges that make up the tris; when you convert back to Epoly these edges are kept and this time displayed, much as if you had created them yourself in your quads.

Don't know if it makes sense the way i explain it : )

Thanks for your help Mouj
But yeah it was kinda difficult understand your post.

but i got the jist of most of it.

I dont mind (just a bit) if new edges appear everywhere but the Faces become lose. if you highlight a face that i just welded in Editable Mesh mode and move it, It comes off the Object. Like peeling off skin.

Weird stuff.

You basically described my work flow. I switch back and forth all the time (I work in games...). I never have any problems.

Do you use any crazy plugins?

No crazy plugins in use.

Its happened on various computers I use and not just mine.

I just start out with a Box, Extrude faces here and there making a nice room or something and then i convert to editable mesh to weld various vertices and everythings going fine and dandy until i convert back to Poly mode and everything just stuff up.

I convert between mesh and poly alot too because of verts that wont weld in Epoly. I get weird results sometimes too. Sometimes, turning or removing the edges seems to fix it.

There really is no reason you should be converting between them so much. And just like mouj said, if you can't weld a vert in poly there is a reason for it.

I only convert to mesh once at the end, spin edges and make my smoothing groups.

btw... can you take some screen grabs of what it's doing?

they mightnot be welding in Epoly mode cause u have a face inbetween the verts ....

try connecting the verts first then use the target weld under epoly ....

If you have any faces with flipped normals, or faces which are not part of a continuos surface (as achieved by extruding an edge from the middle of a flat plane for example) then these will be detached during the conversion to epoly, as it does not support them.

hmmm i got a very similar problem back in Max 4.2 i had a model (clean mesh, no errors, flipped normals etc, i checked everything...) i made it to editable mesh to be able to shift+drag, an open edge (in max5 i don't have to convert to mesh anymore :) ) then back to epoly and the whole mesh was destroyed... flipped normals, deleted faces, strange edges... everything wrecked... i guess it was just a f***ing max bug...
